Lemieux # before 66?

Just wondering if his number before 66 had any meaning like a favorite player when he was growing up or if it was just random.

It was suggested to him upon coming into the league that he flip Gretzky's 99 upside down.

It was suggested to him only because he wanted #99. I think he was #12 before the switch

He wore 27 when he was a kid. I don't know what he had right before playing for Laval or if he had 66 during his whole time with the Voisins. Anyone have some pics of a tweeny Mr. Lemieux?

There's a jersey showing #27 from the younger days, but that's all I can tell ya.

I've got this book that has a few photos of him as an Atom and Pee Wee wearing #27, nothing online, though. Marc Bergevin and JJ Daigneault were on his Pee Wee team.

He wore #66 all 3 years with the Voisins.

Mario Lemieux Numerically

Verified with people associated with hockey in Ville Emard.

Pre midget Mario Lemieux first wore #12 the #27, respectively the numbers of his favourite players Yvan Cournoyer and Frank Mahovlich.

In Midget Triple AAA with Montreal Concordia he wore #21.

After playing Midget Triple AAA Mario Lemieux met Wayne Gretzky in Toronto. Coming back he decided that he was going to start wearing #99. To avoid the pressure of wearing #99 his adviser suggested #66 since it would offer the opportunity for Mario to build his own identity.
Mario agreed and wore #66 during his QMJHL days with the Laval Voisins and throughout his post junior career.

according to Lawrence Martin, who wrote a biography of Mario

he wore 27 as a child because of his brother Alain who also wore 27( or it might have been Richard, pretty sure it was Alain)

however, going into the QMJHL, he thought he needed to carve out his own identity and when his agent, Bob Perno, asked him if he had a new number in mind on their train ride home, he immediately said 99, in honour of Gretzky, who had supplanted Lafleur as his new favourite player.

Perno was surprised by Lemieux's brashness, and he told him there already was a 99 and he was doing things no one had ever done before so why should Mario put that kind of pressure on himself. Then he suggested Mario wear 66.
