Pretty clear Gillis was sending a message to a few of the defensemen that are pending UFAs.

Well done, Mike!

hamhuis rings a massive bell.

Also wanting to get a big shutdown forward.

Nice interview in only a spam of 2min
This. And if we do get Hamhuis via FA, Bieksa is all but gone.

I say Gillis tries to sign Manny Malholtra (defensive forward he said that we need) and a defensive d-man (Hamhuis, or someone cheaper like Lydman or Tallinder).

Ballard's a good addition and pretty tough to boot. If we land one of the bigger fish, Michalek, Martin or Hamhuis, Gillis has done very well for himself.

Juice is most likely gone.

uh? Ballard is now the best hitter we have on defense, and has played among the toughest minutes of any player in the league... he's more of a defensive dman than an offensive one.

and yes, we traded 2 former 1st rounders, but we did also receive a former 1st as well, one that was drafted higher than anyone we gave up.

and by the sounds of it, Gillis is still looking to add another dman... and I like the fact he said he still looking to add a big forward as well that can play a shutdown role.

My biggest worry about Gillis in the past has been that he's so focused on improving the team offensively, he'll neglect the defensive needs, so it's good to hear that he's actively trying to not only improve the defense, but the team's defensive presence up front as well.

Correct. So, right now. I'm 1/3rd of the way to a Mike Gillis man-crush.

There are a few write-ups earlier in the thread. Start at about page 7 and work from there. You'll get some good comedy, too.

honestly that 2 min interview on tsn was better then every interview team1040 has done with gillis in the past 6 months.

we find out

"he is not done"

"he wants a top 6 shutdown big forward"

"Hoping a "d-man" makes it to free agency"

Ballard is very solid defensively, and he's also very physical. You obviously have no idea about him.

Big, young guy with decent AHL stats. Not sure what to think about him yet.

Hopefully and with Bieksa gone he still could acquire Hamhuis and enough left over to improve the bottom 6.

Well I am happy with the trade.
Yes we loose out on Grabner, but Grabner is a guy who has always had question marks around his game. certainly did not light the AHL on fire, and will probably take a couple more years to reach Raymond's level, and odds are will never be as good defensively as Raymond. Plus the whole dealing from a postion of stregth.

We loose a first round draft pick yes, but drafting so low is such a crapshoot.. and with the main guys we wanted gone... I am happy to trade it for somebody that will not only help us now.. but is in his prime, and is locked up for 5 more years.. you really couldn't ask for more.

I still had high hopes for Bernier, how ever for the role he was playing, and the role he was expected to play next year, he was simply making to much money. The trade brings back somebody who can play a very similar role, with an upside as well, with less then half the salary.. good deal that you make every day.

value wise the deal seems pretty even, and 2 thumbs up for this gillis trade.

Gillis see tremendous upside in Oreskvich, I think his highest upside is turning into a Brad Winchester type of player. He will most likely be the 4th line right-winger. There is some clarity to Gillis' plan now, sign a big shutdown center (Malhotra?) and a defenceman (Hamhuis, Volchenkov, Michalek).

The fact that the Panthers were getting rid of salary (essentially a contract dump) to get to the salary floor should mean that they're trading from a point of weakness.

Tallon bent the Canucks over and ****ed them hard.

He still has alot of work to do, but kudos to Gillis for a.) identifying a need, b.) addressing it and c.) doing so early in the offseason.

If this was Nonis, we'd be into mid August waiting for something to happen, and before we'd know it training camp would be here.

Like I said people are massively overrating Ballard who is a mediocre defensmen. He was a shutdown D on a team that nobody took seriously and he wasn't even very successful at that. People keep talking about him like hes going to be this great pickup how he instantly makes us so much better - he doesn't. He will most likely turn out to be a dependable 3-4 guy for us. Hes not big, he isn't a great skater, hes mediocre in pretty much every way.

Whats worse is that people keep talking about how long we have him for at 4.2 mill per. He has just as much chance of turning out to be Kevin Bieksa as he does anything better. Hes going to drive up the value of resigning Mitchell if thats what we want to do, hes going to drive up the value of Hamhuis (who is a better defensemen), and what do you think Errhoff and Edler are going to want now? Errhoff at 6? Edler at close to that? Because comparatively that's what they deserve now.

I really don't think people are thinking this trade through very well.

The question is why are you so stubborn when you clearly know nothing about Ballard? This is getting embarassing for you.
