I like the pick, I just don't like the fact that kids can be selected outa high school and then we don't even see them in our farm system for 3-4 years. I'd much rather see something like the NBA did and require one year of college hockey somewhere.
I think RS is more ballsy than 90% of the GM's, that's why I get somewhat annoyed by this talk.
We come out of the 1st day of the draft with a potential 1st/2nd line winger (RH shot btw), and possibly being able to sign on of the top FA defensemen...
I'd say he's doing a pretty damn good job at gambling at the moment. We'll see if he ends up winning in the end, but he's still laying all his cards down if you ask me.

Just because he goes to college doesn't mean we won't see him for 3-4 years.
We'll have a while to wait before we see what this kid can do, and that's fine. You're not going to find a kid who's going to come in and impact a team right off the bat at 20 (99 times out of 100, anyway).
Hopefully he develops well and becomes one Hell of a sniper/dangler.
I still say Esposito was only drafted as trade fodder.
I say it was a Gormley situation. Regardless of your need, or the type of player you want to draft, the value is way too good to pass up, and you'd be insane not to draft that player.

Yep. He can attend the rookie camps as long as he pays for all expenses himself. Nick Johnson did that several times while enrolled at Dartmouth. Carl Sneep, too, while at BC.

He needs 3 or 4 years though, and that's what almost all of our college guys go through. I think Shero likes that. We keep their rights longer. The kid needs to put on 25 lbs of muscle. He's going to need a few years.

I'm not discounting that he might need that long. I'm only saying that just because he goes to college, doesn't mean that he has to stay in college that long.
Also, what's with the conflicting scouting reports on this kid? The Hockey News scouting report calls him a playmaker, not a natural sniper. Kind of a pass first, shoot last type of player.

Maybe not initially, but Esposito was a center. How willing he was to move to wing, no one knows, but that is why you take the best available player, and why some people preach it here. We got value there, and either we find a way to use him, or he's excellent trade fodder.
Esposito had the hype surrounding him that would make him a high profile piece to add into any deal. I can see where Big Mc is coming from on that one. We also didn't need centers.

No. He doesn't have to, but I'd put my money on that he will be in college for 3 or 4 years. That's just how Ray works things.
I like this pick. I wanted Shero to take a high risk/high reward player and that's exactly what this is. At first, I was a little surprised at some of the players that were "left on the board" that he passed on but I mean... I'm not a professional scout, so...
I do like mostly everything that I've read about the guy. I don't really mind if he's a "perimeter player" -- as long as his skill translates at every level. The "level of competition" thing doesn't concern me too much, either... since that's just in order to go the NCAA route. Hopefully he fills out his slight frame a little bit.
With Tangradi hopefully on the verge of becoming a burgeoning power forward, and the way Sid can control the game with his stick work and board play, I think our top line has room for a "perimeter player" or a "floater."
Hell, I actually like the idea. Find the soft spots on the ice, get yourself open and just finish the passes Sid dishes out. Tangradi should be right there ready to bury whatever doesn't go in initially anyway.
