Looking at the Wheat Kings roster, I really like this kid's development opportunities. Next year Calvert, Lewadniuk, and Fehr are all too old to play in the WHL anymore, and Schenn will probably be in the NHL. That means Stone will be playing on the top line, whereas this year he was a 17 year old stuck behind a bunch of overagers and two top-10 picks. I suppose it's possible that he wilts with all the top defense-pairing coverage on him, but it's also possible that he breaks out with the first powerplay unit duties (which I assume he didn't have this year).

Rundblad was essentially the first round pick this year followed by Culek in the 3rd. Silvferberg, Lehner, Karlsson, Petersson, Sandin all drafted in the two years.....uhhh....new in town sailor?

Good pick, some of us need to remember that this is the 6th round, not likely a skilled forward is going to be available. Murray didn't want to risk going for a European that could end up being an NHL player. Instead, he went with someone that has a good chance to be on the team a few years from now.

Chris Neil? No.

That said, this will be a telltale year for him. He should play on one of the top lines with Schenn/Glennie. He needs to work on his skating a lot, but he is strong on the puck, and will go to the front of the net.

With all due respect, it's only a "sarcasm sensors fail" if there's an indication of sarcasm. Given the disdain for Murray in these forums and others, it's pretty difficult to pick up on the sarcasm in that post.

He's really not that type of player. He doesn't rattle guys with hits, he does some talking, but no more than anybody else. If his skating was AVERAGE he would have been a 2nd rounder.

Interesting. Can you provide a more detailed description of what you've seen from the guy?

Good hands, good shot, good around the net, but just has horrid footspeed which is odd given how good of a skater his brother is.

Fits the "skill can't be taught" approach to drafting this team has taken in the past couple years. If he can be anywhere close to the player Ryan Stone was in Brandon we've got a gem. Ryan Stone was one of my favourites on the Wheaties.

he's a great player. I live in winnipeg, so i've been able to get out to a few wheaties games and I also got to watch the memorial cup. I'm sure with stone playing in brandon agan next year i'll be able to head out to more games then usual just to check him out. I'll be sure to give my .02$ and give a small report of what I saw under the prospects thread.

I know i like what i've seen of him though.

oh I forgot to mention, I used to play AAA a few years ago, and we played against him. Man he was one hell of a powerforward back then, he would drive pretty hard to the net. (scored two goals against me too)

2010/2011 Brandon Wheat Kings 8 4 7 11 -2 9

Off to a pretty good start thus far. We'll see if he can keep it up.

He's leading his team in points so far. A team that includes...Scott Glennie

For a player who's 6-3, 200lbs, and only 18, he's a player with much potential. Never doubt a big winger who has hands, Ottawa really has no idea how Stone could adapt at the Pro level. He was a great pickup for a 6th rounder, and in all truthfulness no one really expected his numbers to blowup as they did.

i cant think of a better post-draft season for a first-time eligible 6th rounder. Outstanding year.

Its funny that we started the year thinking that this is a guy who could be a gritty 3rd liner with some offensive touch, and now he's looking like a real top-6 forward.

5th in the WHL in scoring, 4 points behind RNH and we got him in the 6th round; ya Murray is right for the re-build.

I know all the talk about his skating and I realize he gets lots of ice on a bad team, but the numbers are still very impressive. Time will tell but not many would have predicted this

I hate to be the wet blanket here, but is anyone else slightly worried that his stats are inflated a little bit by playing with Glennie? It happens fairly frequently in the OHL, see Steve Ott/Jason Spezza, Marc-Andre Pouliot/Sydney Crosby, etc.

I sure hope he turns out though. It would be pretty amazing if Alfie retires and we get another out-of-nowhere 6th round pick to replace him right away.

i think we have to be reeeeeaaaaally careful here if we're thinking this kid can be a top 6 forward. we should definitely be pleased with the year he's had after being drafted so late, but i just can't get out of my mind how weak his skating was when i saw him a couple of times in the rookie camp. he was clearly the weakest skater on the ice from what i saw. that's a problem.

So what if his stats are a little inflated? It is still impressive. Btw. Glennie isn't exactly Crosby or spezza. Stone could very well be inflating glennie's stats.
