Dan Girardi contract negotiations

Quote:
Dan Girardi, eligible to become a Group II free agent when the market opens on Thursday, is seeking a four-year deal with the Rangers for upwards of $3 million per. That may be somewhat steep, but Girardi can file for a one-year arbitration award and then become unrestricted next season.

If that should occur, the Blueshirts would almost certainly have to pony up more for a replacement for Girardi, who elevated his game the second half of last season (the Philadelphia incident with Daniel Carcillo and Marian Gaborik was an aberration) and formed half of a still inexperienced, yet reasonably effective shutdown pair with partner Marc Staal.

The problem is that Staal, also an impending Group II but without arbitration rights, likely will wait on Girardi's contract before signing a new deal. It's probably going to cost between $7-7.5M a year for the pair, not an unreasonable number as long as the two defensemen perform up to capability.

It's not steep. That is market for top 4 D who are arbitration eligible and 1 year away from group III UFA status. The replacement is going to cost $5 million as a group III.

4 years/$13 million for Girardi. He was until 7/5 to file for arbitration. Hearings run from 7/20-8/4.

Length and term seem fair. Would have no problem with it.

3 per/4 years for Girardi
4 per/5 years per for Staal

7 mil per for both.

A lot better then the 12 mil per it costs for Redden and Rozsival.

Get Redden and Rozsival out of here and let McDonagh(get him signed) and Sauer take their place.

4 years at $3 million for Girardi and 4 to 5 years for Staal at $4 million are very good contracts for the two of them. Get it done Slats!

I'm absolutely certain if glen offered 3.5 per 4yrs to staal he'd sign (letang deal). Glen is trying to go cheap on him and it may bite him in the ass bc staal is a guy that could attract on offer sheet especially in a lousy draft like the one coming up

Agreed with most, 4 years/$12MM is fine.

I've been projecting 2 years $2.75MM for a while now, but if they sign him for longer I can see it going incrementally higher - 3 years at $3MM per, 4 years at $3.25MM per. I'd be fine with all of those. (Especially since the more I think about it, the more I think my estimate for Staal of 2 years at $3.5MM per might be high given Sather's past history of 1st contracts post ELC all having cap hits that begin with a 1...)

Hopefully in at most 2 years, Girardi is on the bottom pair.

Do you feel this was a good draft?

But we'd no doubt match any offer sheet given. Again unless its 6+ and in that case it doesnt matter about next years draft cause we would also have the 2 1st rounders after that.

4 years for 10 mil. tops for Giradi. He is a restricted free agent, no need to overpay for an average defenseman.

Thank you for agreeing, its like why don't we just give average players money they dont deserve and then complain how we are right up to the cap and we cant make any roster adjustments. He is average and RESTRICTED. If someone wants to give him an offer sheet and overpay great, go ahead, hopefully a team like Buffalo or Edmonton so he can have nothing to do after games in the winter a freeze his you know what off.

3 mill. is not overpayment for him though, that's pretty much fair value

4 years/$12mill for Girardi? Eh.....

I'd feel more inclined giving him another 2yr/$6mil deal. I don't know if I went Girardi for 4 more years.

However, I don't think $3m is overpayment.

I just don't like the idea of 4,5 and 6 year contracts. I can't commit to a lot of things personally for 4, 5 or 6 years. How can they commit to one player for that long? Unless it's somebody dynamic, somebody who is an ultra performer, etc. I'd give Staal 4 or 5 years. Cornerstone on defense. Girardi isn't.

3 mill is ok but i would not want to lock it in for 4 years, maybe 2 and see what happens in 2 years with the team.
