Sutter waived all three of Anders Eriksson, Marcus Nilson and Rhett Warrener in much the same manner. All three were assumed to be buyout candidates; none of them were actually bought out.

If you're going to criticize a move, wait until it's actually been made.

Flames have never bought out a player. They have waived guys before, but they never buy them out. Usually though, when a player like this is waived - it indicates he won`t be part of a team. Marcus Nilson was waived before he was "loaned" across seas. Anders Eriksson was buried in the minors. Rhett Warrener was waived, then replaced back onto LTIR I do believe.

How about this for a possible move in the Flame's future: It's not far fetched to think Iggy hints at being moved again. For what possible reason would he want to stay?

Oilers could use Nokelainen. Bring him to camp try him out on the bottom six and waive him if he doesn't cut it. Either way he'd be a boost to both the AHL club or the oilers if he brings a good 2 way game.

Don't the Oilers already have like 30 or so players just like Nokelainen under contract or with RFA status?

Koistinen is too slow to be an NHL defenseman.

He has but thats no excuse for the debacle that was this past season. The phaneuf trade needed to be made I agree but the return was godawful in hindsight. He made a move for the sake of making a move and that's rule #1 of good gming as every gm says. Sometimes it's the trades you don't make. Phaneuf should have been dealt in the off-season to maximize his value.

NHL general managers don't "bury" $3m. It doesn't happen. It's not going to happen to Huet, it's not going to happen to Kotalik, and it's not going to happen to Cheechoo. Do you have any idea how much money $3,000,000 is, to the Ottawa Senators?

In 2009:
Quote:
After 11 straight years in the playoffs, the Ottawa Senators failed to qualify last year finishing a disappointing 11th in the Eastern Conference. No playoffs, a $3 million higher payroll and a falling Canadian dollar (since rebounded) caused the Sens to lose money last season for the first time since the NHL resumed in 2005 after the lockout.
Just last season they, as a franchise, lost money.. and you think that they're going to just eat up $3m?

Koistinen - sux. #6-7 d-man, PP specialist. KHL.
Kotalik - sux. Just brutal. KHL.
Vandermeer - good bottom-pairing guy. Most of the team can use him.
Nokelainen - PK specialist. Fourth liner.
Cheechoo - no skills anymore but he works so hard. I hope he gets another chance on bottom lines role. He's warrior and can be used in playoffs.

Kotalik on the wing nexto to Crosby or Malkin would be interesting.

I think he needs to take a year off, and just heal up his injuries, and workout hardcore to prepare for the 2011/12 season.
Maybe play in the KHL.

Nokelainen is a very good defensive player. He can play RW and center. We could use him for sure as we really don't have a lot of those defensive minded forwards. He's also really physical and he blocks a lot of shots and he can skate really well. I'd take a look at him.

If you want Nokelainen, it actually makes sense to take him on recall. 1/2 his current salary would be 475K, less than league minimum. That is of course if you want him. He's an ok spare part.

I dont think its that much about the money. Ottawa spent the most money in the league by far last year, and only lost a few million as a team. Melnyk made way more than that from Scotiabank place (He gets all profits, and it does pretty well with concerts/concessions) and Capitaltickets.ca (melnyk controls the ticket selling service in ottawa which he created to drive out ticketmaster. He earns extra commission on all sens tickets as well as other events tickets in ottawa, including bluesfest.)

If Murray had determined that in order to ice the best team, he needed to keep cheech in the minors, Cheechoo would stay there. Murray, i'm sure, is probably doing this because the buyout hit for cheechoo this year isnt huge, next year we have a ton of cap space anyways, and he doesnt want to get a bad reputation for burying underperforming vets in the minors.

I expect cheechoo to sign a contract between 800k-1M and his new team would love him. I actually wouldnt be that surprised if he just took NHL minimum on a short term deal back in SJ.

Good luck cheechoo, you had some rough times, but if not for your salary, you would probably be loved in ottawa.

Speak for yourself. As long as White re-signs, I'm very happy with the return of Hagman/Stajan/White. If you were a big Dion fan, I'm sorry he was traded from your favorite team but the return is certainly not godawful as you suggest.

Anyway, the Kotalik deal was brutal no matter how you look at it. You win some and lose some and Sutter clearly lost that one. If Higgins re-signs at a reasonable price, the deal looks a little better but horrible nonetheless.

It's just speculation that these players are being waived for a buyout. In the case of Kotalik, I am betting that the plan is to hope someone else takes him but that if no one does, he will still be in a Flames uniform next season.

Truth be told, he was not horrible with the Flames last season. He led the team in hits after being acquired and always put in an honest effort. He certainly needs to score more though.

I can't see Sutter justifying a buyout cap hit for a player that wasn't completely useless. If it was Staios, then fine.

Then again, Sutter has shown awful decision making abilities in the past year.

So, essentially he traded

Lombardi, Prust, Gormley, Jokinen, Vandermeer and Prust again to return Higgins and Kotalik

And now Kotalik's contract is going to sit as dead-space on the Flames' cap and if they don't re-sign Higgins that will be all to show for a whole pile of players.
Hindsight is 50/50.

I'm sure at the time Jokinen was traded, there were other teams interested, most of whom probably offered comparable packages of their own.

However, Jokinen for Kotalik and Higgins was absolutely brutal.
