Question For Your Board About A Former Rnagers Player...

At a neighborhood BBQ yesterday down here in central NJ, I met a pretty cool guy who went by the name of "Steiner" who claimed he played for the NY Rangers between 1978 to 1983 as an enforcer.

Now at first, I thought the guy was blowing smoke up my ass, but as the day went on, I spoke to a few of the neighbors from around the corner & they all stated that he did in fact, play for the NY Rangers. They also said that he has photos of him in action & a few of his old jerseys hung up in his home. As well as other memorabilia from his days of playing. One of which, includes a blood-stained jersey from a fight he had with Dave Schultz. Moreover, it was Schultz's blood. He even has an old looking tattoo on his arm that dons the Ranger's emblem with "hit marks" crossed off for every fight he bloodied his opponent.

I looked up the name Steiner on HockeyDB this morning & I can't find him. Maybe that was his nickname? I don't know.

I'd hate to think that the guy was bsin' me (as well as the neighbors - especially he he made up fake memorabilia) as the guy does live in the neighborhood & was cool enough to hang out with & all.

Any of you old time Ranger fans know of a player by that name; "Steiner" ???? Thanks!

I see. I also don't see much even with the letters, "Stein" in it as well. Very strange to think someone would go through all that trouble fabricating stuff to make himself seem like a somebody.

Hoping to believe or find something that correlates to him actually playing, as I would hate to call him out on it when I see him next.

Maybe he was a tough German-Named player that went by that nickname?

That's the thing, I didn't see his stuff. The party was up the road from where he lived. I'm going by what my neighbors told me.

He only mentioned a few tough bouts he had & showed me the tattoo.

Maybe on the farm team?

Guy is bs'ing you. According to Dave Schultz @ hockeyfights the only Ranger he fought between 78-80 (his retirement) was Dave Maloney.

Alot of pre-season tilts when un documented so maybe he was a guy that came up for a look and ten was sent packing.

One guy I can think of from that era was Pete Stemkowski. Alot of people called him "Stemmer". Not sure if he was the guy you met or not. He wasn't a big fighter but he did go from time to time. He played during those years, but not as long as the guy mentioned.

From the era the big fighters were...

Fotiu
Beck
Hospidar
Marois
Kotsopolous

Speaking of Kotsy maybe Kotsy Jr can answer the question by asking the big guy? He was there for some of that timeframe he would know better than anyone.

Lastly, he could be a ghuy that tooled around the minor leagues and tangled with some of the same players while there.

...Or he could just be plain full o ****!

Thanks for your help folks! When I see him again, I'll ask him for his full name & tell him why.

I hope he's legit, as the neighbors probably will feel somewhat betrayed if this guy has been making up stories just to feel like a big shot.

Hey Lion, I thought Pete Stemkowski too, but it doesn't match up to the same period.

I'll keep you posted on my findings.

Please don't take this the wrong way but the guy is full of crap. There was never a ranger named Steiner and for sure not a enforcer. The 80's are my era and trust me not even in Bingo/New Haven , Or Denver was there a player with that name

Oh I'm not. I'm trying to give this guy the benefit of the doubt.

The way some of the neighbors talked, they seemed up on the guy. I personally never heard of him. But when a guy in his early 50's who stands at 6' 1" - 6' 2" and in good shape at about 220 lbs with scarred hands & that cool tattoo, I didn't think otherwise.

Oh though you're right heaveho94...I should have asked him for his full name. I will the next time.

I met him too in Toms River NJ about 7 years ago ice skating. He told me the same stories about Schultz. I think he said his name was Stein, Mike Stein I think. I didn't remember him and I've been a fan since the 70's. He was a nice guy though, very friendly. He saw me wearing a Rangers jersey and approached me and said I used to play for the Rangers.

Yeah! Sticky this thread until the mystery is solved! Its the first thread I am checking in on every morning.

My thoughts, if he said NHL/4 years/fought Dave Schultz -- he probably played 1 week in camp or something like that... The Rangers maybe owned his rights.

Just throwing this out there...Pete Stemkowski lives in Lido Beach, NY. I live in Long Beach, and have seen him a bunch, he rides the train home from the games.

Pete Stemkowski : Stemmer, The Magnetic Pole, Polish Prince.

Other than that, I doubt it played an NHL game, maybe a few pre-season games, minor league games or he's full of it.

Or it could be this guy?

http://www.linkedin.com/in/msteiner

Prob just a fan who fooled you. Looks like he lives in Jersey and has a "Lets Go Rangers" app on his page.

Tknow -- Ironically...I just asked one of my neighbors over at the local Quick Check this morning about him & he said his name was Mike Stein as well. Still can't find anything on this name either.

My neighbor said the guy is a straight shooter, but can't figure out why he's nowhere to be found. He also stated that awhile back he sold one of his original playing jerseys at a local charity auction in Toms River for some benefit & it went for decent bucks.

I dunno what to make or think of it.
