It is if they're bought out.

can they not just send them down now? What is the rule on that anyways?

I dont see why they should have to wait to camp. Demote them all and quick

I don't get this one either. Is Sather trying to free up $1.7 million for the summer when instead he could demote them after training camp and free up $3.4 million instead? He will then have $1.7 million dead cap space this season and next, won't he? What am I missing here?

Or does Brashear's entire $1.4 million count against the cap because of his age when we signed him?

I know Lundqvist and Avery are BFF with Voros but his on-ice play doesn't warrant him getting another chance.

Meanwhile, it's amazing how much Patty O'Sullivan has dropped off. I'm sure some team will take a chance on him, but that's a lot of money for a floater.
There's a moral here. Don't become friends with ****ty players.

Buying out all 3 would free up about 1.7 million in cap space, I think they all have a year left on their contracts so they will have a 1.7 million cap hit for the next 2 years. That's extra money to resign Staal, Girardi, and gives us more wiggle room to sign a certain Russian...

Doesn't this clear them for the summer? That would help. I wasn't thinking buy out.

Voros may be claimed at 1/2 price. Maybe Minny or NJ or Detroit.

That would require the Rangers to bring him back up through waivers first.

Or... it's the humane thing to do. If they're bought out, they can go get NHL jobs elsewhere. And since the cap hit is only $300K more than if they demote them, why not? It also saves the organization about a million bucks in real money.

AND... it also actually saves space on the summer cap.

I'm guessing that's the rationale. Hopefully someone does us a favor and picks one of 'em up... (yeah, right)

.

All three players clear and the Rangers trade them for a large contract with 1 year remaining and the acquiring team buys them out. A team which has the space for Brashears $1.4 million hit. It would be about $400 plus k for 2 years to buy him out. Real money.

imo voros is a servicable 4th liner who gives it his all everytime hes on the ice. I'd like to keep him here as a 13th forward and only use him in games that we need grit in the line-up

That's re-entry waivers. Totally different situation.

And why the hell through waivers? I could only imagine it if it exploits re-entry waivers, so that one team continues to pay half the salary.

BUT, you've got to clear $7.65 Million before the season starts.

You could probably get them to swap (2) of those guys for Patty, but I'd doubt all (3) or EDM is on the hook for a larger cap hit and more actual money owed.

At least we received SOME kind of service from Voros and a drop from Brashear.

But that Rissmiller signing was absolutely mindboggling.

Guys, waiving a player does not remove his cap hit unless another team claims the player. Players cannot be sent down during the offseason. There are no re-entry waivers during the offseason.

Brashear falls under the 35+ rule. If he's playing in Hartford, he will count 1.3 mil against our cap. If he retires or is bought out, he will count 1.4 mil.

Brashear is due to make 1.3 mil in actual salary. Buying him out will reduce that to 867k but it will not affect his cap hit.

Voros and Rissmiller both have 1 mil cap hits. Buying them out would reduce their cap hits to 333k each. We would therefore save 1.333 mil against the cap during the summer. But Rissmiller wasn't going to be on the team anyway, so the actual savings during the season would only be 333K. Voros' replacement will cost more than that and we'd still carry a 667k cap hit for Voros and Rissmiller next year.

Buying them out would only make sense if Sather needs an extra 1.3 mil in extra cap space to not go over the summer cap. I seriously hope that's not the case.

Good point, RB. IIRC, in order for a team to buyout a player, they have to have been waived by today, correct? So, the idea of trading Brashear (potentially with one or more of the other two) for a larger contract which the Rangers will then bury is still in play. In fact, in order to keep it in play, they had to make this move.

However, they could still simply buy them all out. In particular, if they can't get a willing partner for Brashear and he counts on the cap anyway, well ****, why pay him too?

Probably just to wait until the start of the season and put Rissmiller and Voros in Hartford again. Hope Brashear ****s off to Russia
