Why on a three-dimensional Earth would we trade for Sergei Kostitsyn.

Whoever edited my title, you spelled Kostitsyn wrong. Also, not a good trade, not a good trade at all.

We just traded for one of the most baggage-laden players in the National Hockey League. Not to mention he sucks.

NASHVILLE PREDATORS ACQUIRE FORWARD SERGEI KOSTITSYN FROM MONTREAL

- Send goaltender Dan Ellis, forward Dustin Boyd to the Canadiens -

Nashville, Tenn. (June 29, 2010) – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has sent goaltender Dan Ellis and forward Dustin Boyd to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for forward Sergei Kostitsyn (SAIR-gay kaws-TIHT-sihn). All three players’ current contracts expire on Thursday, July 1.

Kostitsyn, 23 (3/20/87), posted 18 points (7g-11a) in 47 contests during his third season at the NHL level with Montreal in 2009-10. In 155 career NHL contests over the past three seasons, the 6-0, 210-pound left wing has amassed 68 points (24g-44a), in addition to 49 points (15g-34a) in 55 American Hockey League games. Kostitsyn has also suited up for the Habs in each of their last three playoff appearances, putting up eight points (3g-5a) in 18 games.

A native of Novopolotsk, Belarus, Kostitsyn represented his country at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, leading the Belarusians in points with five (2g-3a) in four games. He was Montreal’s sixth selection, 200th overall (seventh round), in the 2005 Entry Draft. His brother, Andrei, has been part of the Montreal organization since being selected 10th overall in the 2003 Entry Draft.
I bolded one part of this statement for emphasis.

Kostitsyn is a restricted free agent, though, the other two were unrestricted.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see him sign with Dinamo Minsk or some other club in Eastern Europe, because it's highly doubtful that he would crack our roster. And even if he did, everyone would probably hate him.

Which brings up. What is the "Futures" part of the trade? What are the picks?

Look Ellis was gone. Boyd was gone. Poile once again got something for NOTHING. NOW, what will happen when the Preds tell kost to go enjoy Siberia and they collect on the 'Futures'.

Probably some kind of compensation to Len Barrie for the enormous amount of controlled substances that both GMs required to make this deal happen.

To me, trading impending UFAs for a guy with well-documented personal problems who clearly has no desire to put in the hard work that so many of our prospects are required to put in, and who is just as likely to sign elsewhere as the players we traded away just feels low and pointless.

If you can get Sergei's head on straight, he will turn into a great top 6, but that being said, he's an idiot.

It's air for ether. Ellis and Boyd are gone and were gone anyway. SK was party boy in Montreal.

I find it funny Nashville traded for a Russian supposed head case with immense talent. I wonder what Radulov thinks of this?

Furures means . That if Montreal is able to sign Boyd or Ellis they will give more to Nashville in the Future . If unable to sign Boyd they will give Nashville less . This is not really a trade but Montreal gets the right to sign these player before July 01 when every other team has a shot at them . As Poille said . A couple of teams were interested in Boyd .

Boyd being an RFA with arbritration rights was not good for Nashville . Had they quailified Boyd he could have taken them to arbritration for more money.May not have got it or deserved it but obviously not a risk Nashville wanted to take .h

I love the fan base. Poile does nothing, he gets yelled at. He makes moves, he gets yelled at. No matter what decisions he makes it's wrong. Let's see, we've gotten two players for guys we were going to lose as free agents. They may not be what everyone wants but we have gained assets back and in my eyes, that's a good thing. Even if SK turns into an idiot, so what, we tried something. People are always saying we need change and need to go in a different direction. Well, here we are, going in another direction and everyone is up in arms. Why not wait until the picture is fully painted before we go nuts on Poile.

At least we were able to get something for two players we weren't going to sign. That said, this does reek of Poile trying to get lucky with a cheap but troubled skilled forward. I don't see it working out but we can only hope SK realizes this is prob his last chance in the NHL and steps it up.

I disagree ... he could have traded for a non head-case that can score more than 8 goals/year & not get into trouble off the ice
