No wonder Turco declined. We tried to pay him at least a million less than he is worth, even in a saturated market.

3 year deal worth $6 mill is unimpressive. I bet it was front-loaded anyway. Turning down that must have been easy for Turco.

He won't get frustrated and over pay, at least until their are no options left.

Turco, Ellis, Nabokov and Mason are all available.

Turco to San Jose seems to make sense to me. Nabokov to KHL and Mason to Philly?

Ellis signs in Montreal or something.

I don't care how quickly he turned him down, as long as Holmgren didn't insult him and push him away from signing with us later for a different deal. I'm glad that Holmgren is trying to buy low rather than just saying here's 3 years $15 M and a NTC

I still think Biron goes to Montreal. Makes too much sense even tho there are rumors he said he hates it there. We will see.

Which makes me also think that it's not too far off what he offered Nabby too.

I'm happy to make low ball offers to test the market.

When they all get similar offers on July 1 from other teams, Homer's phone will be ringing off the hook with 'do you still need a goalie?' calls....

I'd give Nabby a 3 year $10 mill contract though.

$4, $4, $2

Cap hit is roughly $3.33

We'll see. A lot of veteran guys have taken less money in their declining years recently. Turco's been making $5M for many years now, he's set financially for life. So is Nabby.

The question is: do you want a chance to win the Cup?

When they consider all the offers, we'll find out who wants to win and who's just padding their retirement plan...

I agree. It was a starting offer to see if he would bite. No harm in the offer. So go up to 9mm for 3 years or 6mm for 2. If not then thsi is where he needs to show paitience and hten walk away. I do not want Ellis unless he is the like the 4th option. However they get if it is an older vet i relaly hoep they let the backup play some games to keep him rested

I don't think that there will be no options left in this UFA goalie market. It's a buyers market. The moves Holmgren has made the last couple of days signals to all the agents that the Flyers are looking for a starting goalie, if it wasn't obvious already. Every single agent wants the Flyers involved as a bidder to drive up the price for their client. Philly also has to be one of the more attractive destinations because of the defense that will be in front of the goalie. If they are patient, they will get a real bargain.

The Flyers are the center of the goalie musical chairs this time, with the Sharks. It's going to be a cat and mouse game. The Sharks want Nabokov to sign here, because then they hold all the cards with Turco, Mason, Ellis, etc. If they want Greiss to get a chance to be part of a 1 and 1A duo, they'll go after Ellis or Niittymaki (my guess is Ellis would be their first choice). Sharks have been linked to Leighton too. Washington will be in on the 1/1A thing too.

They don't need to be all over someone. For whatever reason, they were scared to not get Boucher last year and paid more than they had to. Let this play out, because unless Holmgren is absolutely ********, they're going to get someone.

Homer is just playing the game. I get thyat there is a lot of posturing and everyone making starting offers they won't ever hope to get. What I was saying was that I don't think Turco declining the offer is at all telling of whether or not he would like to play here. I think it's just more standard operating procedure at this point (like everyone is saying).

Also the fact that he's getting permission to speak with Turco and Nabokov before July 1 is a clear signal to Leighton that he better accept backup money if he wants to be here next year.

You can only hope that Holmgren learned some valuable lessons from last season with Emery. You need to play the market. I hope he doesnt throw a ton of money at any goalie at noon on Thursday.

Dont know if it was posted yet, but according to capgeek twiter:

Evgeni Nabokov's next contract won't be a 35-plus, even if it's signed after his 35th birthday.

People keep saying he is, but he isn't. He has to be 35 by the start of the fiscal year. The Pronger thing confused everyone.

Correct. June 30th of the year in which the contract takes effect (AKA this year) is all that matters when signing FA's. Pronger's deal takes effect this year, so June 30, 2010 is the date that matters. He is 35 at this date, so it doesn't matter that he was 34 when he signed it. Same logic can be applied to Nabokov. Even if he signs AFTER his birthday, he is 34 as of June 30th.

Fixed the typo.... Freudian slip there, as I compared Quick last season to Jamie Storr early in his Kings career when he was supposed to be their goalie of the next decade.

They will sign someone and it could still be Nabokov or Turco. They just have to wait until July 1 like the rest of the league.

From ERIC DUHATSCHEK:

Quote:
Goaltending will be another matter altogether. With just three teams – the Philadelphia Flyers, Sharks and Tampa Bay Lightning – realistically in the market for a No. 1, many of the free-agent goalies are going to have a hard time finding work. The expectation is that the soon-to-be ex-Sharks starter Evgeni Nabokov will land in Philly, the soon-to-be-ex Dallas Stars starter Marty Turco will land in San Jose, and the Lightning will continue to search for a bargain, possibly settling on the soon-to-be-ex St. Louis Blues starter Chris Mason.
