Oops....shouldn't we be a little afraid of that? I understand that he can and I also believe that because the Habs traded for him, the least he could do past July 1st would be to give the Habs the last chance to make him an equivalent offer to what he would have elsewhere....but that's where it cannot go. There's a lot of chance that it would go to something we wouldn't be able to offer. I do envision the Flyers giving him 3M$ + and we can't go there.
Or they could just re-sign Leighton at a fraction of that price...
"Montreal is a team that we (Ellis and agent Mike Liut) were looking at, but you don't know what you'll get from other teams."
"I talked to (general manager) Pierre Gauthier and (head coach) Jacques Martin yesterday and got their ideas from a hockey standpoint"
"And hopefully things can work out."
"Obviously in Montreal with the culture and the language there's a lot to think about - I haven't taken French lessons since Grade 9,"
"But my wife and family are excited about the possibility of playing there and I've had lots of friends and relatives call to say how exciting that can be. Right now, Montreal is the present situation and hopefully something can be worked out."
"My biggest thing is playing on a team that wins"
"You don't always have to be the guy with that title and it's nice to play a lot of games, but you want to put yourself in a place to win a Stanley Cup."
This made me more confident we can get him signed. He is the kind of guy teams want in the locker room and he can genuinely make a difference on this team if we get a deal done.
If Price falters, we can fall back to Ellis. Or a better situation...Dan and Price in a 1A/1B kind of tandem, with one or the other getting more starts depending on who is hot and at what time.
Ultimately of course, I'm sure the organization wants Price to win out the job and keep it all year long (not like last year), but having Ellis is only a plus, and nothing less. If Price plays 50 or so games and Ellis gets the rest, I'll be a happy camper. Even if that evens out between 40 and 45, I still wouldn't mind.
Reading the interview on here made me believe we really can sign him. It seems he truly wants to play in Montreal. I love the attitude he's bringing as well. Hopefully we can lock him up. He and Price would make a great tandem.
It doesn't mean much really, but he was also a teammate of Plekanec and Andrei Kostitsyn during the lockout season in 04-05 when the Bulldogs split between Habs and Stars prospects. Little piece of random trivia.
If this trade gets us rid of SK and a enthusiastic and capable backup such as Ellis, I'm going to french kiss PG right on the mouth.
Woah woah... PG hates french, haven't you seen the headlines!?
In all seriousness.. Ellis is the PERFECT compliment to Carey Price. When I saw Ellis in Hamilton, he wasn't exactly NHL material. He had a great work ethic though, and used that to land himself a starting job in the NHL. With him pushing Carey and teaching him a good work ethic, very good things will come.
