Is Colby Armstrong a possibilty?

Was talking with a buddy of mine, and we both agreed that Armstrong would be a GREAT fit in Montreal. Now personally, I can see him returning to Pittsburgh, since he apparently loved it there. But if we could get a shot at him for cheap, I think it would be an awesome addition.

Take a look at these lines, I don't know about you guys..but I like what I see here..(this is assuming we sign Boyd and Armstrong obviously)

Cammalleri-Plekanec-Kostitsyn
Pouliot-Gomez-Gionta
Boyd-Eller-Armstrong
Pyatt-Lapierre-Moen
White
Darche

I like.

I think he'd be perfect on the third line but I think he will get overpaid big time this off-season, I'd rather try trading for Ladd who has more offense and plays just as physical.. his salary would also likely be cheaper as he's still a RFA.

Cammalleri-Plekanec-Kostitsyn
Pouliot-Gomez-Gionta
Ladd-Eller-Lapierre
Pyatt-Boyd-Moen

50% chance Pittsburgh, 50% chance Toronto.

There have been threads on this before. While a fit to our needs, he's going to be too expensive for what he does, and due to cap constraints he simply isn't an option for us.

I love the lines you've made up. As I mentioned in another thread, I don't think we'll have the cap space to add Armstrong. If we could get him for cheap though, I'd be all for it.

I'd even argue Armstrong can play a complimentary role on top 2 lines on occasion. He will prob get 2.5-3 mil ish though and be out of our range.

I'd love, love, LOVE to see this guy as a Hab.

Unfortunately, he'll be receiving a quite large increase in salary and likely won't accept a discount just because it's coming from Montreal. Too bad though, the Habs bottom 6 would like quite nice with him in there.

Torres is a much less "sexy" pick, but he'd fit the philosophy of our team much better, if we're actually looking for some physical complement to our top-9.

I still have this feeling we're going to get Lombardi.

Armstrong would be a good fit, but he may end up overpaid due to a weak UFA forward crop this year, like 3-3.5 mil per year.

Do not want. He kind of has problems and isn't that good in his own end. He's pretty inconsistent in terms of effort.

According to the last reports, and according to projections (Price: 2M, Ellis: 2M, Lapierre: 1M, Boyd: 800K), we have about 3M to play with tomorrow. Can Armstrong be had for anything under 3M? Maybe. I still have this feeling he might get himself out of our range, when a Brian Burke will give him 3M-3,5M just because he's truculent.

If we want a somehow physical winger, capable of bringing some scoring on the top-9 (3rd line)... if we want to take that route, Torres is the way to go.

If we want versatility, Lombardi is the most logical pick.

Both will be had for under 3M IMHO.

He still is a very good 3rd line winger with good speed, physical abilities and some skills. He also has some size. He'd be a good complement, and a guy who could step in on the top-6 on the short-term if a guy goes down.

3M is usually the little gap the Habs like to keep just in case they need to add a player later on.

in 2009 and 2010, we had less than 1M available in cap space. In 2005-2006 and 2006-2007, same thing.

The only year when we didn't spend to the cap was 2007-2008, and it's becasue we couldn't get our hands on our targets on July 1st (Rafalski and Briere)

absolutely, and I really don't get why someone would pay 1st and 2nd for Byfuglien before trying to sign Colby. I guess a cup ring is worth that much.

No chance of him signing here. Armstrong, like Kovalchuk, Hamhuis, etc will be signing with the Leafs. THe Leafs will also be adding Spezza and Ryan through trades.

I love the idea of Colby Armstrong in a Montreal uniform, but I can't see it happening. As mentioned, teams are going to overpay for him, and we're not going to be one of those teams to do that.

UFAs (my own projection):

Alexander Frolov - 5,500,000$
Colby Armstrong - 3,500,000$
Martin Biron - 1,500,000$

Assuming:
Trade: Andrei Kostitsyn, Roman Hamrlik

2010 NHL Salary Cap: 59,400,000$

Cap Space: 422,024$

Pouliot - Gomez - Gionta
Armstrong - Eller - Moen
Lapierre - Boyd/Darche - Pyatt

Markov - O'byrne

It is possible (even more if we don't sign Frolov).

PS: I know I am overpaying Armstrong... but we do have an history of overpaying players.
