Nigel Dawes

Anyone like the idea of claiming Dawes off waivers from CAL?

Not a long term deal or expensive, he's signed for 850K next year, then an RFA. Not a big guy, but had 14 goals and over 30 points last year, would seem like a potential 3rd/4th line fit?

Might as well just keep Mike Comrie, might as well keep the evil we know over the evil we don't know.

I was a little surprised that they waived him. Had 14 goals as well.

In other Flames news. Higgins wants to test the UFA market and use Calgary as his back up plan.

Yes.

He was 6th in Flames scoring last year. He's the 3RW that replaces Pisani.

Do it. Do it now.

not interested.

small skilled player that can't crack the top-6 on a permanent basis but isn't effective in a bottom-6 role. Sounds familiar..

Hemsky
Eberle
Omark

Maybe if one of these guys can't make it out of training camp. It would also be easier to acquire that 3RW after TC if one of them doesn't deserve it.

Eberle and Omark are not Pisani replacements.

And finding a 3RW with a value contract that he's likely to overperform on? One who can skate? That's not likely to happen in October.

For the price ($850K), I don't think it's such a bad move.

Dawes - Fraser - Stortini

Not a bad 4th line, but I wouldn't want him playing anywhere higher than the 4th line. The thing is, we're already paying Jones close to $1M already, and we're a little loaded up at LW (assuming both MPS and Hall make the team).

NO! Why are we so desperate? He couldn't cut it as a scorer in CALGARY!

We're in the process of getting rid of these type of guys. Read any of the other post going on right now.

If Potulny could skate and hit.

And didn't shoot the puck as well.

He's Raffi Torres, cut off at the ankles.

Yeah, and we could use a Raffi Torres who can play the right side.

Dawes is useless on a rebuilding team.

Even if Dawes scores 15 goals next year a 4th line grinder that can win draws will have more value at the deadline.

Dawes is nice to have around if your a contender and you need a PP guy if injuries happen but in Edmonton he serves pretty much zero purpose.

They're clearly not tanking next year, SS.

They've already gotten their 4th line grinder that can win draws. Now they need a 3RW that doesn't hurt you defensively, can score a few points and keeps one of the kids from playing bigger minutes. It also gives Horcoff a RW to play with that has some offense and can skate with him.

At 885k, it's a little-reward/no-risk situation.

If Dawes was 6'2 you might have a point.

As it stands claiming Dawes makes a lot less sense than re-signing Comrie and re-signing Comrie is debatable at best.

Dawes doesn't burn you defensively, though. Or come with the same health issues Comrie has had. And he plays harder.

I didn't mean that in a good way. I mean the Raffi Torres that was always supposed to be a budding power forward, and if he ever got his act together, he could score 40....blah blah blah.
Torres was, on paper, and in fading memories "the type of guy we need". The Raffi Torres that shows up in reality is that guy maaaaybe 20% of the time. The rest of the time he's as useless as an a$$h0le on an elbow.

He couldn't cut it in EDM, CBJ, or Buffalo.
Dawes couldn't cut it in NY, PHX or CGY. No thanks. Not now. If you want to add grit in the bottom 6, go for big bodies.
