Priessing on Waivers

Quote:
COL's Tom Preissing is on unconditional waivers and if not claimed tomorrow at noon, will get bought out by the Avalanche.

I know there is a little bit of a money/fiscal savings from this, but since the Avs are not likely to spend to the cap this year and may want the cap space next year, why are they buying him out.

I'm kind of surprised but it gives me at least some hope on 2 fronts:

1. It might be to free up cash for free agency

2. (More likely) They don't want a wasted roster spot on the AHL level and that will give more ice time and development for the new crop of defensemen.

My thoughts exactly. The fact it's the day before the UFA market goes BOOM. Maybe they do have some plans and Sherman was bluffing...kind of like Burke, but not as obviously... just a thought

The avs already have what 20+ million in cap space, even if you guess at salaries for those yet to be signed. I don't think they opened up a few hundred thousand from this for free agency sakes *eye roll*

The only reason they did it was to open up a space in the AHL for someone who can actually play with the team in the future.

That and because Kroenke is a cheap ***** and doesn't want to be spending extra money anywhere for his NHL team.

Many positives because of this,

+ Cap Hit

Weird right? Why would we want the cap hit? Well if the Avs don't hit the UFA market this summer which is highly likely having his cap hit will push us closer or past the cap floor. Not exctaly a huge + but a + none the less.

+ Roster Spot In LEM

Shatty, Holos, and Cohen will get the time needed to improve. Plus LEM got better as well, haha.

+ Money Saved

Really, bussines wise - win!

pretty much this. add to it that we're guaranteed the Avs won't keep Preissing up to meet the cap floor, and thus we're more likely to add someone in UFA, and I'm very happy.

The cash saved is only like 900k or something..

+ One more contract removed. Isn't the max like 40 or so?

He is 20, so I believe he can play in the AHL.

St Michael's Major's have the Memorial Cup this season. I would be surprised if the Avs want him to play in the AHL rather than captain his junior team in the Mem cup. I guess it will depend on his training camp.

Gives a ton of PP time for Shattenkirk and Cohen.

Do the Avs have to split Preissing's cap hit on the following 2 seasons, or can they absorb all the cap hit next season already ?

Hopefully he gets claimed by some team that really lacks offensive dmen on their farm team, but I'm not betting money on it

Has anyone followed Gaunce last season? Why was there such a regression in his offensive numbers?

He was injured for a little while. Many have said he was focusing on his defensive game.

Never even gave him a shot. Good work getting rid of a solid PP D-man.

We clearly have extras to spare....

Surely you're joking.

You can't put Preissing even on the PP because he's arguably the worst defensive player who calls himself a D in both the NHL and the AHL.

Look at his numbers for the Monsters... he was always a minus, worse than younger, inexperienced D. The guy's a disaster.
