Ideally for the Habs is they get a solid back up for 1.5 mil or less. With the depth on the UFA goalie market they should have no problem getting Auld, Biron, Ellis, Hedberg or Nittymaki. Right now there are more UFA's than open spots.
LA and Vancouver will probably go young with back ups with Bernier and Schneider.
The only teams shopping for a true #1 are Phillie, San Jose and TB...I think Nabokov, Mason and Turco/Ellis...plus THomas via trade.
That leaves Turco/Ellis Biron Nittymaki Hedberg Emery Toskala Auld Danis Raycroft Leighton Emery Lalime battling for back up spots.
Just got off the phone with Dan Ellis. Says it was misunderstanding. Reporter asked him about that figure and he said it's something he would consider. He never put out that figure. He's laughing it off as his first experience with Montreal media!
That's my reasoning. If you trade Halak and go with Price, you're hopefully assuming that he can pick up the mantle this season. And if he can, then play the crap out of him, 65+games.
And yeah all those little millions you save, they add up in the end to a pretty good upgrade somewhere.
That's if Halak signs for 4M and we sign a back up for 2M. At this point in time, the upgrade from Ellis to Halak is well worth 2M IMHO.
I just don't think we should rely on our back up to be playing 35-40 games. We decided to go with Price, were we assuming he can handle it or not ?
Don't tell me "I don't understand". Maybe it's you that doesn't.
I'd take Biron at 1M/year above Ellis at 2M/year any day of the week, and 5 times on any other day.
I don't know... I wonder if Biron has 30-40 solid games in him. You never know. Price might just get hurt for all we know.
The additionnal bucks would be valuable cap space to get beter players, too. That being said, having two capable goalies is something pretty damn tempting. That being said, I would take Biron, Boyd and Torres before Ellis, Boyd and nothing else.
He would most likely play 35-40 games this year. I don't see Price coming in and carrying the load for 60+ games. Plus, I would rather we sign a guy like Ellis to take some heat off Price. No need to rush him anymore. Something like 40 games this year, 45-50 next year, then 60 the year after would be ideal. This is all dependent on whether or not he actually earns the right to play 40 games a year.
