Completely agree. Gonchar is a top three offensive defenseman in the NHL and has a skillset that will still be useful at 38 or 39. He might need to play sheltered ES minutes by that age, however he should still be very good on the PP.

I think the Devils could use a 60 point defenseman.

And yes, signing a player over the age of 35 is a risk, however our past experience with Malakhov, Mogilny, and Rolston should have no influence on this situation - they're completely different players.

Gonchar is willing to sign a two-year contract. 2yr/$12M would be fine with me.

I'd offer him one of those sketchy contracts personally. 7m, 7m, 3.5m, .5m, .5.

Which would bring him to 18.5m over 5 years, a 3.7 cap hit. Which I guess would kinda screw us the last couple years but at this point it's win now, deal with that later.

Depends how Lou looks at it. If he really is in this WIN NOW FOR MARTY mentality, that deal is perfect since it gives us a ton of cap room to upgrade the next 3 years even with the signing.

If he's concerned for the future, he would never do that.

In the grand scheme of things though, I'd rather Gonchar be a complement to Martin if possible, not a replacement

I'd LOVE to get Gonchar on this team, especially if we keep Martin.

Martin-Greene
Gonchar-Salvador
White-Mottau/Fraser

Definitely an improvement.

A huge improvement, that'd be one of the better D's in the league.

Gonchar/Salvador would produce a pretty big minus. But I'm not doing two Gonchar sessions in one day.

It's better than the Rafalski-Matvichuk pairing we had a few years ago, and that was certainly a capable pairing.

No, it's not, Gonchar is freaking awful defensively. He is almost certainly done as an effective top defenseman. Rafalski is mediocre at worst.

I'm not doing this again.

If we must sign Gonchar, I'd only want it to be for a year. And he's supposed to be asking for 3+. Not happening.

According to Dreger, Gonchar wants to play at least 4 more years.

Quote:
Gonchar negotiation isn't progressing. He wants to play at least 4 more years and wants to play in 2014 Olympics. Pitt wants 2 year deal.
There's no ****ing way I would give Gonchar 4 years. I would offer two years, and if he still has some left in the tank after that, maybe bring him back on a year to year basis.

If he wants to play that long, he'll need to prove he deserves it two years from now.

He's not getting 4 years from anybody. If he isn't willing to settle, well goodbye Sergei and good luck in the KHL.

Only way Gonchar's getting a 4 year term is if he's elected to office...

I'd sign to a four year deal.... if he's willing to take league minimum.

So why dont we trade Gonchar to Jersey for Paul Martin and a 5th rounder
I would love that because i dont think were going to resign Gonch so if we got Martin and a 5th at least we would get something for Gonch
