Gonchar had 50 points in 62 regular season games last year and 12 points in 13 playoff games. How is he declining?
Its also been reported that he would sign a 2 year deal now rather than a 3 year deal
Completely agree. Gonchar is a top three offensive defenseman in the NHL and has a skillset that will still be useful at 38 or 39. He might need to play sheltered ES minutes by that age, however he should still be very good on the PP.
I think the Devils could use a 60 point defenseman.
And yes, signing a player over the age of 35 is a risk, however our past experience with Malakhov, Mogilny, and Rolston should have no influence on this situation - they're completely different players.
Gonchar is willing to sign a two-year contract. 2yr/$12M would be fine with me.
Today I read that Shero said that his plan A was to sign Gonch and Hamhuis but I highly doubt that will happen just because Gonchar could go some where and get 6 million just because the lack of real offensive defensemen.
So why dont we trade Gonchar to Jersey for Paul Martin and a 5th rounder
I would love that because i dont think were going to resign Gonch so if we got Martin and a 5th at least we would get something for Gonch
