You're right; that's the logical choice. But WSH isn't exactly keen on building a well rounded, defensively responsible team. They've embraced the role as the high flying run and gun all offense powerhouse, and signing Kovalchuk would fall in line with that thinking.

I dunno. For some reason they scare me more than NJD or NYR or TOR, and I've heard rumblings here and there that they're in the race more than people think.

Their GM says otherwise. They're looking at promoting players from within and are not going to make a big splash in free agency.

I don't think they have the cap space...$12 million to sign 13 guys AND add Kovi? I can't see it working without another major move like trading Semin or something

They have $16 million and 9 roster spots if they want 23.

Well which one is right? Even if yours is and they give Kovi $9 million, that gives them $7 million to sign 8 guys. I guess it's possible but I doubt they would do it..Their 5 RFA's alone should make a combined $6-$7 million at the least

I'm guessing that Washington would be looking for a cheap 1 year deal for Kovalchuk, not anywhere near $9 million. Especially if they move Semin for a defenseman or goalie.

capgeek is almost always correct.

Plus I cant see Kovi signing a one year deal. Too many risks. What if he gets serioulsy injured next year or gets a concussion? What if his goal totals drop off by a big number? I don't think he would risk not signing a huge deal now and having security for years to come. His value is at the highest it's ever been, and most likely ever will be since he's only going to get older..

I'm sure the KHL would still give him a ton of money next year.

KHL doesn't offer a lot outside of dollars. They play in smaller arenas, less marketing, less TV exposure etc.

I still think Burke might do something stupid like offer Kovalchuk 10yr $100M. Something he couldn't refuse.

how about WSH takes Frolov instead of Kovalchuk. Then we get Kovy to ourselves.

Some reports that Kovalchuk bought a house in NJ on NJ's forum. Take it for what it's worth (not a lot).

Quote:
For what it's worth, (I'm a real estate appraiser) Ilya Kovalchuk is a registered home owner in Alpine, NJ. Same town where Britney Spears, Jay Z, P Diddy, Gary Sheffield, and others have homes.

When he was traded here, he rented a townhouse in Hoboken, NJ. So if he indeed just bought a home in Alpine, that says something.
But don't think that he's re-signing in NJ just yet:

Quote:
Like I said on NJDevs, if you were to take that as face value (and not that he wanted a place to crash with the family in the summer) that could mean two things.

Marbury lived there when he played for both the Knicks and Nets. And the Rangers are set up in the Tarrytown area I think now? It's closer to Tarrytown than it is Newark.
Quote:
Funny... Alpine is basically directly between the Devils and Rangers training facilities (25 mins to Tarrytown, 35 mins to Newark).
Again, take it for what it's worth.

EDIT: Alpine is an especially ritzy town. A small house will run over a million dollars, and there are houses that run in the tens of millions.

Kovy also has a house in Florida, but I don't think that means he is signing with the Panthers/Lightning anytime soon.

I saw Kovy and Dean at the In N Out by LAX today. Couldn't hear what they were discussing though...I think it may have had to do with Simmer changing numbers.
