Anyone else think he would be perfect for a 3rd line RW spot? He's got great speed, can chip in some offense, comes cheap at 850K and is an RFA after that's up. He's also a very hard worker, think a guy like Powe with much, much better hands but not the same defensive acumen. Anyone else think we should pick him up?

I wouldn't be ecstatic, but I wouldn't be mad if they did. He is a decent player and could probably step it up during times of need (injuries).

Did he play with Betts?

I wouldn't mind picking him up, unless it meant we would part ways with Powe. I'd rather have Powe than him.

They were on the same Rangers team in 05-06 and 06-07, don't know if they played on a line though.

Didn't Dawes and Betts PK together all of the time or did I imagine that?

Edit: I think I imagined that.

14 goals, 18 assists for a guy making 850k on a putrid offensive club like Calgary? I dont get it.
what gives with this move?(why is Calgary even waiving him)

If we're not bringing back Asham to fill out the top 9 in a 3rd line wing kind of role...I'd want the guy replacing Asham to be a significant upgrade offensively. Would Dawes be that? I do like that he'd bring more speed.

I don't expect Asham to be back, but I'm a little torn on him. There are certainly games where he frustrates me, and I wish someone a little faster and more talented were in his place out there. On the other hand, there are also a lot of games where I love what he brings to the table, especially when you consider his cap hit. Also, his art of zen fighting style has made him just about my favorite hockey fighter ever. He's a badass middleweight, and we'll miss that a little bit.

I'd have no interest in him as a 4th liner...or, so to speak, a Powe replacement. I think Powe is just about the perfect 4th liner, and I want him back for sure.

I don't know about significant, but he would definitely be an upgrade. Dawes has much, much better hands and the speed to get into areas to score. He'll forecheck, but isn't a fighter.

He's small, but I wouldn't hate it.

For you guys who didn't know or forgot, Dawes-Richards-Stewart were Canada's energy/shutdown line in the WJC in 2004 and 2005.

This is about where I am. I really like Asham, I have a soft spot for guys who max out their talent, and that's what Asham is. But if Asham goes I like Dawes in that spot; if the lines stay relatively the same he's a better bet to bury the chances he'll get playing with Giroux and JVR.

Dawes plays with a lot of heart. I like that. Throws big body checks too but he is not a RW and a left hand shot.

I still do not mind if we look at him.

I could live with Dawes, although I'd much prefer Clarke MacArthur if Atlanta were willing.

Go to the Calagary forum: they call him a defensive liability and say that he has poor puck control (gets knocked off easily).

Ill take 14 goals and 18 assists over the second coming of Scottie Upshall.

For those questioning earlier, I believe Sjostrom was the PK guy with Betts on the Rangers.

Can't say I'd party in the streets if we picked Dawes up, but hes young, cheap, and effective, plus I'd much prefer Dawes to Asham.

Except we need size more than we need skill and scoring. I'd rather have Nystrom, but it doesn't look like there will be any cap room to add a forward anyway.

10 years ago I would've agreed with you, but not in today's NHL. Our best forwards during the postseason were Briere, Leino, Giroux, and Richards - none of them are over 6 feet tall.

Now I'm not saying we should have a team full of undersized players, but more skill and speed is never a bad thing nowadays.
