I think we're all basing that on, why the **** would he want to sign with a lousy team like Toronto? Kovalchuk wants to win, and he has no chance in hell doing that with the Leafs.

NHL radio had them looking for a second line center to replace Brendon Morrison and feed Semin. I dont see Kovalchuk as being probable anywhere else BUT HERE. Call me optimistcally giddy at the thought, but I think its finally going to happen that AEG spends a wad in free agency and gets a Crown jewel (pun intended), and its about time, actually is exactly the right time

I still think it comes down to NJ and LA.

Is it tomorrow yet?

I'm glad im not the only one who has an unhealthy obsession with this years free agent day.

I am going to be refreshing websites every few minutes, all day long tomorrow (as I have been the past few days). I am going to be very disappointed if we don't sign him tomorrow.

It certainly seems that way.

I'll have my twitter app open on my iPhone. Not sure how productive I will be around 11 am CT.

At least the app auto-updates.

Kovalchuk. That is all I ask.

Is this really news???

LeBrun already said 5 days ago that DL tried to trade for Kovy's rights.

I realize that Lombardi's comments immediately prior to this quote all say the Kings have a reached a point in development where free agency is a legitimate option but follow my train of thought.

1) Lombardi has consistently indicated that he favors a conservative game plan and does not like to overspend for free agents.
2) There have been a few rumors (hints?, speculations?) that Leiweke is in favor of getting Kovalchuk and that signing him would have his finger prints all over it.
3) The quote indicates that Lombardi had to convince Leiweke and Anschutz that the best way to build the team is his way.

Wouldn't that seem to indicate that despite Kovalchuk being the biggest name he will only be brought to LA if the price is right? That despite ownership's pleas to do something dramatic Lombardi has won the argument, tied a fixed value to Kovalchuk, and will not budge from it?

Of course it could just be Lombardi speaking like a lawyer and not saying anything.
If you isolate Lombardi's comments and take them out of context, yeah, you could interpret them that way.

Having been present during the interview, I feel quite certain that I've interpreted his comments correctly. He was NOT talking about convincing ownership that the status quo was the way to go. Rather, he was telling them that the team is now that the point in the rebuilding/building process where they can start looking at bringing in a high-profile player.

Everyone else I spoke to who was there when Lombardi made those comments saw it the exact same way.

True. But LeBrun wasn't present for the interview with Lombardi after the draft, which I thought folks might like to read.

Feel free not to! :-)

No dude, it's nothing personal.

I'm just WAY past reading anything about Kovy whether good or bad. There isn't any news out there that is going to change my mind about us signing Kovy, as I have ZERO doubt.

I already have him on the kings roster playing on the first line with Kopi and Simmond.

So, all these news just aint news to me, that's all.
