You're not alone. I find it odd too that we haven't heard yet about the progress of contract talks with Boyd (or lack thereof).
Personally, I don't believe Boyd was just a throw-in in the deal. He looks like an asset that Jacques Martin could definitely use for his versatility on the 3rd line, and as a candidate to step up anywhere in a top-6 role here and there, either as a center or as winger, when someone on the Gomez/Plekanec lines gets on a cold streak.
Somewhere in the 750-850k range would be fairly satisfying for a player with that type of untapped potential.
All in all, I'd find it pretty disappointing that we let him go when we had like 36 hours to work on something with him.
