Slats track record

1) Sign Free Agent to bad contract

2) Trade bad contract for expiring contract

3) Recieve praise for being "awesome" at trades

I don't know what to think anymore.

He refuses to even tender a QO to Christensen because of "The cost" but yet he'll gladly go out and blow wads of cash on FA's like a drunken sailor on shore leave.

Anyone else thinking exDevil Defenseman?

Since he is good with trades he has shifted to that format today. Hopefully it isn't just July 1st that haunts him! Rangers will trade today. They call it "weeding".

Best case, Sather oversleeps today and misses out on giving out bad contracts.

Oh noes, Erik Christensen the waiver wire hero isn't going to be a Ranger!

Sather didn't qualify Christensen because of arbitration rights, he then offered him roughly 40k less than his QO for two years which Christensen rejected... Guy got saved by Sather basically and then rejects an offer over 40k...

Happy UFA Day!

I have a feeling Sather will not be real active in the UFA market, expect for may be a D-man like Michalek.

I think he will be more active in the trade market for some reason. I see him fleecing a GM.

$14 million with 14 roster players signed. Have to re-sign Staal and Girardi (About $7 million total) and a back-up (About $1 million). If Christiansen and Shelley do not re-sign, figure Weise and Stepan to fill their spots ($1.7 million total). Possibly McD making the squad if he doesn't go back to school (Another $900K). That leaves about $3 million in cap space, with a 20 man roster. If the Rangers waive Redden, they will have almost $10 million in cap space. If they can find a deal where they can trade Brashear and/or Voros out, they could have close to $12 to $13 million.

Gotta watch out for the summer cap of $65 million, though.

I'm guessing Sather is going to keep trying to sign Christensen and Shelley, even if it's mainly just keeping his original offers out there.

I'm also guessing they'll target Lombardi and Mitchell (as there were some rumors they were looking at Mitchell) to shore up center and defensive depth. Nothing exciting, but there's not much excitement out there on the FA market. Don't think they're in the running for Kovalchuk.

Not sure who they'll look at for a backup. Lot of 1B guys out there and not a lot of starting spots open. I could see them waiting on the backup goalie for a long while until one of those guys settles for a backup role because he can't get a starting job, kind of like Biron last year.

If we're looking for excitement, I'd say it'll happen via trade, but I don't know what Sather would be able to pull off.

I guess guys like Frolov and Zherdev might be on their radar, but just outside possibilities

As a Ranger fan you can just hope that we don't hand out those longterm big money contracts again. But somehow Sather will find a way again to get one of the big names, it wouldn't surprise me if it is Kovalchuk at the end of the day.

It would be nice to get a "mean"/hardhitting dman like Volchenkov. Btw what about Kim Johnsson? I like him when he was a Ranger, didn't follow his last years very closely though.

yea not only that but eklund was reporting that rangers nd flames were in talks last night abuot a 1st line center -- the flames being the ones to receive it. i didn't get the rumor because we don't have a 1st line center, and they guy who played best there last year didn't accpet his qualifying offer.

if hamhuis didn't resign yet w/ pitt then i hope the rangers come in and snag him. if he did then i think we'll get markov today. it'd be pretty cool to see ilya on this team but we need solid defensemen more. i'm hoping for a gilroy for wheeler trade and also the signing of hamhuis/markov.

This.

I just can't wait until he signs somewhere else finally and we can go back to talking Rangers hockey without a Kovalchuk argument breaking out in every thread.

So, we should have a pretty good idea by the end of today what Sather plans to do with Redden, if we go ahead and get some signings out of the way.

May the force be with you, Slats, I hope you know what youre doing.

I realize hockey isn't the most popular sport in NY, but you'd think they could at least give it 15 seconds or so. I turned on the news this morning and the sports reporter says today is the the big free agent day...and stupid me is thinking, "Wow...gonna hear some hockey news!". Then they proceed to do 10 minutes on LeBron James, about whom I frankly don't give a damn. It's so frustrating being a big time hockey fan in NY.
