I'm worried we're signing some pointless center, like Koivu, Jokinen, Modano or Belanger... You get my point. Lombardi might be an interesting option, but I reckon he wants to get as much as he can, so I hope we ain't signing him.
Honestly, I'd love if we got Kariya, I know it's unreasonable, it's jsut I love him as a player but I have no idea what's he looking for. There actually are some interesting players like Whitney, Poni, Frolov, but I don't think Sather should go hard after them. If there's a reasonable oportunity then great, but please, don't splash big cash on them.
I am really interested what's gonna happen as far as defense goes, there're many options plus it depends on our chances of signing Girardi and Staal long term. We'll see, I'm hoping for some smaller, smart moves... Yeah, I know, wiiishful thinking.
Honestly, while I think signing Kovy is the best move the team could make, I'm getting the strong impression that they won't.
If that's the case, then don't sign ANYONE notable outside a backup G and maybe a lower pairing D. No over 35 players, except maybe on veeeeeeeeeeeery cheap one year deals. (That includes Prospal.) No 2nd tier UFAs like Lombardi or Volchenkov/Martin/Hamhuis on $3-4-5MM (or more!) deals.
If we walk away from this with Saku effing Koivu for $7MM over 2 years or something like that, I'm going to blow a gasket. If we're going to get "placeholders" they damn well better be REAL placeholders - you know, the kind that can actually be replaced if someone like Stepan steps up in camp. Not an aging, respected vet with a "name" who's going to get his icetime no matter what and has just enough left in the tank to guarantee that we once again fool ourselves into thinking that we're in the running for a playoff spot right up until the very end, when we once again finish with a crap record - but just good enough to miss out on a top 5 pick.
It's amazing how we've become conditioned to cringe every year on the morning of July 1, hoping against hope that the day passes without Sather doing anything stupid. I suppose the silver lining is that because of Sather's previous July 1 mistakes, he's limited in what he can do this year on July 1.
