Meszaros is a good player. I think this is good news. And most likely Coburn is gone.

But it makes you think....at 4 mil for Meszaros...what was Coburn asking for?

Also, a seccond round pick, though it stings to "lose" one, is nothing for a player of Meszaros' capabilities.

Andrej Meszaros was someone we looked into two years ago.

He underachieved in TAMPA BAY, where all good players go if they want to suck for a year or two.

He's a top 4 defenseman.

Big cap hit, but if he plays like he did in Ottawa we get steal at that price. Still better than overpaying for an UFA.

This is the guy we should have been trying to nab when we did the whole Steve Eminger stupidity. Hopefully he plays like he did in Ottawa.

Why not just save the 4 million and use it to sign Hamhuis.

What the **** is Holmgren doing... I'm really beginning to doubt his moves and I'd never even consider firing him before this week.

I don't think this means Coburn is gone at all... I think this is the 5th D setup that Holmgren was trying to create with Hamhuis.

Ottawa fans were unimpressed after his rookie season and felt Bryan Murray was cashing in. He was also playing with Wade Redden.

Meszaros can be a good D man, he was for Ottawa, but he kind fell off a bit in Tampa. Hopefully he regains some potential form.

2nd round pick isnt too bad a price, but his contract is pretty high.

Good question.

Answer: Holmgren has an unnatural fear of the free agent market.

By the way:

"Senators dealt him to the Tampa Bay Lightning on August 29, 2008, in exchange for Filip Kuba, Alexandre Picard and San Jose's first-round draft pick."

We would've had to pay that to get him two years ago.

Now we get him for a 2nd, and there's no question we wanted him 2 years ago.

I love this move.

**** this ****.

This is the complete opposite of what I wanted. Another high paid defender?

WTF?

Perhaps I just love Coburn so much that I'm blinded, but I would think Carle could be moved? If the rumored numbers for Ellis are true, with Carle's money gone, we could grab Ellis for 3.5ish

His offense is unimpressive in TB, but all things considered he can be a quality guy for you. If he gets back to being a 30+ point getter for us then you're looking at a decent contract if his defensive play matches. He was 22 when he left Ottawa, and his rough year was the classic sophomore season.

I wanted him when he moved to TB, and was frustrated at the time because it made too much sense for us to have gone for him. Then we gave up a 1st for Eminger... ended up giving up Downie, etc.

I'm still letting this one soak in a bit. 4 mil is a bit expensive. If it means Coburn is gone, I'm ok with it. I need to wait for more deals to make a further judgement.

imo Meszaros will improve as soon as next season but I am not sure he is the player we need. He does not play physical game and this is what we are missing on our blue line.

Maybe Carle is gone? I would not mind trading Carle for a high pick.

This means one of two things:

1] Goodbye Coburn

or

2] Hello Leighton/Boucher

Chris, when you're supposedly getting something for cheap... you probably want to think about why it's cheap. If he plays like he has the last couple of years for $4M, then that's a big problem.

It really sucks seeing the other team's board after a trade with them and they're all excited.

Thanks for making some people's days better, Paul.
