All we did was help Tampa by taking on a bad contract.

Homer pisses me off.

24 year old #3 offense-defenseman for $4.0m/year (Meszaros)
27 year old #3 defensive-defenseman for $5.0m/year (Hamhuis)
29 year old #2 defensive-defenseman for $5.0m/year (Martin)
28 year old #2 defensive-defenseman for $5.5m/year (Volchenkov)
36 year old #1 offensive-defenseman for $6.0m/year (Gonchar)

Take your pick.

I like this move. The price is a little hefty but Mez will regain his form in Philly.

Could be a win/win for both teams. It wasn't working for him in Tampa for whatever reason, but he still has a lot of talent and won't have to fill as big of a role here.

That's my problem with it. Even if Meszaros plays well, it's just poor allocation of assets (AGAIN).

No one is complaining to complain, we just took a ****** contract off Tampa's hands.

We don't spend the money on a goalie, but we do for Meszaros? And you're wondering why people are complaining?

I think we are overvaluing picks again, we got a former first rounder who has the ability to play in the top 4, what 2nd rounder were we going to draft next year that could give us this flexibility on defense. We now have a bit more negotiating power over Coburn, or we make Carle expendable.

I am worried about his cap hit, but frankly those who are mad about the pick, why? We are building a team to win immediately, not waiting for a potential 55th or higher pick to maybe make the NHL.

Meszaros can be good, but in Tampa he hasn't played well. Hopefully he regains is Ottawa form (like Jester said), otherwise we are stuck with 4 mil in deadweight for years

Serious, serious risk.

This guy has not come close to living up to his contract his last 2 years.

He is pretty decent defensively though at least.

I'm not obsessed with Hamhuis. I thought trading for Hamhuis and keeping Carle/Coburn was stupid. I was fine with just going after a cheap vet for the 3rd pairing. In fact, that's what I wanted to do all along and use the money in goal.

However, we're getting pretty liberal with "offensive-defenseman" if we're applying that tag to guys that have a combined 33 points over the last two seasons. You can blame that on TB all you want, but Kurtis Foster somehow managed to put up 42 points.

I really think Holmgren has every intention of having Carle/Coburn around and Meszaros playing the 3rd pairing role.

Forgive my ignorance here, but do you have to have a 13th forward and a 7th dman on your roster as part of your cap hit? I was under the impression that you did.

again i make my point, the gm has no cap mngt skills. where does this $4m come from? cap mngt is the most important skill of the new salary capped league for a gm

Its not about the pick, the pick is meaningless. We just took on a pretty bad contract for a guy to play on our 3rd defensive pairing.

You don't allocate $4M to a guy on your 3rd pair. Its just not smart.

I guarantee Homer has ZERO intentions of Meszaro's being the on the 3rd pairing.

Meszaros replaces Coburn. Even if Coburn stays, Coburn is the 5th D.

The possibility of Michalek at $4M per season (or Martin at $5M) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Meszaros at $4M per season.

This off season gets worse by the day. What has happened to Meszaros since he left Ottawa? Is he the player we saw with the Sens for 3 years or the one we've seen with TB the past 2 seasons?

Rather have Meszaros in the top-4 than Coburn.

I am going to be annoyed though if Martin signs for around 4, he would have been a nice fit here.
