I'd probably try to base it off of contracts which were made in the last year more than the older ones.

True, you have no choice but to do that for the most part since contracts tend to go UP over time.

That's very true, although I feel the cap not really going up over the last two years has balanced out some of the outrageous deals.

Well, going from the POV of an agent, you can point out that contracts have gone up and that basing it off of contracts signed earlier, you get a good frame going and then you go back and forth on the extension on why he deserves a little more or deserves a little less.

And while the cap hasn't gone up a lot, it's still budged up a little bit, giving teams a little more wiggle to their room.

I'd use contracts like Kesler, Cammalleri, Havlat and Gaborik along with a couple who get signed today as bargaining. If I'm Mikko's agent, I want a contract which reflects his status as captain of the team; if not there's always the threat of free agency.
