Just as bad as the Armstrong signing. Just an awful headscratcher.
Yeah big bad problem it would be to have too many good players...

2. Cody Hodgson will probably have to start his transition to the NHL on the wing. Not necessarily a bad thing as expecting a rookie to excel playing the third line center position on a cup contending team is asking a bit much. The expectations for his defensive play and faceoff prowess won't be nearly as high and he can always transition back to center later in his career if need be.

3. McGuire is an idiot. I don't think much more needs to be said after those comments.
Couldn't have said it better myself.

Hindsight I know, but Gillis must be kicking himself for not getting him last year at $700K and keeping Johnson instead. Pretty big misstep IMO.

If Cody Hodgson proves in training camp he's good enough to make the team, he can centre Raymond and Kesler on the second line. If he's not good enough for that role, then he's better off in Manitoba anyway.

Michalek at 4 could very well put Hamhuis at 4.5, Martin at 5. Not a shock there.

You wonder why Toronto wouldn't have gone after Manny, especially with their lack of depth C-wise.

Better then Ryan Johnson at $1.2 million per year.

This guy was always going to cost more then the speculative salary figures bandied about here; he had a great year for San Jose last year, and brings pretty much everything we needed for our bottom six: elite face-off guy, size, pk's, etc.

HUGE upgrade. Now lock-up Hamhuis, trade Bieksa, and we just have some basic house-keeping to do.

Think of it this way: Bernier for $2m or Malhotra for $2.5m?

I think there's a propensity to think of Manny Malhotra as a Ryan Johnson replacement, hence the horror at the contract. He was close to a 40 point pace last year, great on faceoffs, kills penalties, plays physical. Everyone wanted a guy like this for the third unit, especially earlier in the year when Wellwood was struggling. Did anyone really think we'd get one for one million per season?

Much higher, I'm betting, especially since we haven't heard anything yet. I was expecting $3-3.5 for Michalek.

Pretty obvious when you think about it like that.

I don't think it's hindsight. There were a number of people saying the same thing last off season.

Uh the NHL has thing called a "salary cap" which limits your options to upgrade in other areas if you spend too much in another.

It is an overpayment by 500k, but it is worth it. He helps some of our weaknesses (PK, grit and size on 3rd line, leadership).

If Cody Hodgson isn't NHL ready, then Malholtra will play center.
But if Hodgson is in the starting lineup, Hodgson could play on the wing, or Malholtra could play on the wing.

But since Vancouver did this, I don't see them signing Hamhuis unless he signs for $4 mil or under.
I see Vancouver signing someone like Tallinder, someone who wont get more than $3.5 mil.

It seems some people have a hard time with the concept of free agency. There's a price to pay for acquiring good players without moving assets to do so and that price is cap space.

What a tool Pierre McGuire is. I can't think of a better linemate for Cody Hodgson than Manny Malhotra. His size, skating, faceoff prowess and versatility will make Hodgson's transition to the NHL that much easier.

I have no problem giving Steve Bernier's money to Malhotra. He is probably the best fit for the bottom 6 of all the free agents. Because of this Gillis was willing to overpay by 500K - nothing wrong with that IMO.

Now, which team do you think made the better deal?
Colby brings a more physical game and has more "truculence". Malholtra is phenomenal on faceoffs and is a good shutdown guy.
