Brutal, brutal signing. Not happy with this at all. If Hodgson makes the team (you have to assume he will at some point over the next 3 years) we have a 4th line centre making 2.5million AND with an NTC?
Just as bad as the Armstrong signing. Just an awful headscratcher.
Yeah big bad problem it would be to have too many good players...
1. No doubt Malhotra is overpaid at 2.5 million. That being said, we don't know what other teams were offering and needless to say he fits in really well on the team's third line if they are indeed changing into a bigger, shutdown line.
2. Cody Hodgson will probably have to start his transition to the NHL on the wing. Not necessarily a bad thing as expecting a rookie to excel playing the third line center position on a cup contending team is asking a bit much. The expectations for his defensive play and faceoff prowess won't be nearly as high and he can always transition back to center later in his career if need be.
3. McGuire is an idiot. I don't think much more needs to be said after those comments.
If Cody Hodgson proves in training camp he's good enough to make the team, he can centre Raymond and Kesler on the second line. If he's not good enough for that role, then he's better off in Manitoba anyway.
Better then Ryan Johnson at $1.2 million per year.
This guy was always going to cost more then the speculative salary figures bandied about here; he had a great year for San Jose last year, and brings pretty much everything we needed for our bottom six: elite face-off guy, size, pk's, etc.
HUGE upgrade. Now lock-up Hamhuis, trade Bieksa, and we just have some basic house-keeping to do.
I think there's a propensity to think of Manny Malhotra as a Ryan Johnson replacement, hence the horror at the contract. He was close to a 40 point pace last year, great on faceoffs, kills penalties, plays physical. Everyone wanted a guy like this for the third unit, especially earlier in the year when Wellwood was struggling. Did anyone really think we'd get one for one million per season?
It seems some people have a hard time with the concept of free agency. There's a price to pay for acquiring good players without moving assets to do so and that price is cap space.
What a tool Pierre McGuire is. I can't think of a better linemate for Cody Hodgson than Manny Malhotra. His size, skating, faceoff prowess and versatility will make Hodgson's transition to the NHL that much easier.
I have no problem giving Steve Bernier's money to Malhotra. He is probably the best fit for the bottom 6 of all the free agents. Because of this Gillis was willing to overpay by 500K - nothing wrong with that IMO.
