Possibly one of the more shocking statements on this forum, tapping into both the Carter hate and the Giroux homerism.

I disagree.

I would agree that he struggles with size, I've always said that. Other than that though, I think he's a brilliant player who's always in position.

There aren't defensive "numbers" +/- is a suggestion at best.

You point to failed assignments over and over that weren't evne his fault. SCF when Bolland (or Brouwer? I always mix up the B's haha) had 2 goals. It was a failed assignment by Asham at the point (on the play where Parent lost his stick in the corner) and you managed to blame Giroux.

So are the Flyers gonna be the first team to deploy the 3 defenseman and two forwards alignment or has that been done before?

I don't hate Carter in the slightest.

I have said, repeatedly that Giroux struggles with size. Carter has him destroyed there. I think that is the only difference in their defensive game. I do believe Giroux's defensive game, aside from that is on par with Carter. But, you can't teach size, so Carter won't ever struggle in some positions where Giroux might.

I've posted the more detailed ones, he blows defensively, had the worse relative +/- on the team, miles worse than Asham and JVR.

Too busy puking about Shelley to look them up again.

Great third pairing defensemen and real character guy. Obviously Lavi wasn't too keen on Bart/Parent/Krajicek.

Doesn't appear a goalie is in the cards unless someone's ass is going out the door, though.

The team needed to upgrade the third pairing. Whether that means another move (Carle?) is possible, time will tell. As a separate note, O'Donnell was paired with Pronger in Anaheim.

Didn't know Pronger has played with him.

I know our situation. It makes literally zero sense though unless another move is made. We already have 6 NHL d-men and that extra d-man spot could have been filled by an AHL guy. We don't have the cap space to be making signings like this when we still need a starting goalie.

Nope. It's going to be Leighton/Boucher. Look on the bright side, if this season is a total disaster, Homer is going to get fired.

No he won't. That finals run bought him at least another 3-4 years

Only took two years for Clarke to go from SCF Finalist GM (1987) to being fired (1989-1990 season, though I forget the exact date when he was let go).

If Leighton is the starter, it's not a bad approach.

I was content with Bart as the #6 D but having O'Donnell at $1m would be fine, if we didn't just waste $1.1m on Shelley... The roster is almost full now. 2G, 7D, 12 F including Cote who will probably be sent down instead... Carcillo right's get traded? Asham goes. And maybe we resign Powe?

Below is a transcript of today’s conference call with Sean O’Donnell.

Q: Were you talking to the Flyers pretty much all along?

“They were, according to my agent, the first team that expressed interest. It was pretty quick. I think it was probably within five or ten minutes, I’m on the West Coast, so after 9:00 AM. My agent called me and said Paul Holmgren had called with an offer. It was right around, I believe, what we ended up signing. That was attractive, having a team that seemed very eager to get you done and locked up as soon as possible.”

Q: What do you think about this situation here? This might be one of the deepest blue lines in the NHL in quite some time… this is a good group to be part of?

“I think that’s a huge understatement. I think this six defense, and with Bartulis also, matches up as well as anybody in the league. I was fortunate enough to win a Cup with Anaheim, and that team was built on defense with Pronger, who you all know, and Niedermayer and Beauchemin and myself and some other guys. I think if you look around, you’ll see with Chicago this year and with Philly getting to the finals, I think it starts on the back end. That was one of the things that made the team really attractive, and I don’t see why the team can’t build on what happened last year and move forward.

Q: Did Chris Pronger have a factor in you coming here?

“Well, I think most of you know the way Prongs works. We’ve been friends for a long time, and he can be very persuasive. He thought it would be a good fit. I’m at a point in my career where the dollars are what they are. It was just a matter of finding a spot where I could fit in on that bottom pair and really make a contribution. Prongs did put some calls out and we spoke a couple times. Him and I are friends, but it came down to where I felt the best fit was and where I thought I would help a team win a Stanley Cup, and Philly was on a very, very short list. The fact that Paul Holmgren did act the way he acted, as quickly as he did, it made it a very easy choice and I couldn’t be happier to come out there.”

Like him being here, hate Shelley signing. Should have went after a goalie. Bad move Homer, same old story, good offense, defense but questionable goaltending.

That was a different time. After the Flyers went to the finals in 1997, they lost in the 1st round 4 out of 5 years.

I like this deal. He would be very good. J.Smith type but takes a little too many penalties.

I would love if we would trade Carle, Carcillo ( I like Carcillo), Boucher for a pick and young prospect. Signed Zherdev 1M and Turco. I can't and spell count so I think I am over the cap.

Can some one post how many hits and block shots he had last season and a season before? Thanks.

O'Donnell was paired with Pronger the whole time they were in Anaheim and they complemented each other incredibly well. He's obviously lost a step since and isn't a top 4 guy anymore then but take that for what it's worth.
