I hear we r in talks with la right now. What do you think of coburn (3+ cap hit) for Jack Johnson (1.4 cap hit)? Same age, JJ wants out of la and he solves our cap problem!

I absolutely could not. He is too streaky and inconsistent and has disappeared in the playoffs twice now, I dont give a **** if he was injured. This is precisely why I want to trade him. Because he is one of those "flashy" players that will always get paid more than more steady, consistent performers.

Anyone know if Homer has qualified the RFAs? The only thing worse than the Flyers potential cap hell is the actual cap hell the Blackhawks walked into.

Wow, didn't mean to be a thread killer.
With Leighton, capgeek.com has the Flyers at $9.87M space remaining after 17 players (11 F, 4 D, 2 G). One of the 11 forwards is Cote. On average, the team has about $1.6M per remaining spot entering free agency. That's not great, but also not bad.
It will be better when the Flyers trade Boucher and a salary or pick/prospect for one of the young goalies on the market (I hope). Then they can pay Coburn and get another defenseman and mid-tier winger.

Just like that the Flyers have the highest payroll in the league. We're the only ones within $1M of the salary cap as it stands, and that's without Carcillo and Powe being signed. Someone's leaving.

Wow, the Pens have loaded up. They have 14 players for 2011-12 and only $7.5M left in cap space. In 2012-13, they have just 10 signed and $14.4M of open space. Kunitz, Dupuis, Talbot, Tangradi, Goligoski all to be FAs in the next couple of years. It could be this year or else for Pittsburgh. They've got more than $18M in their first five defensmen for the next two seasons, and $16.25M in Martin, Michalek, Orpik and Letang for the next four seasons.
Flyers' top-5 D: Around $22M for next two seasons (as it stands now), but Pronger and Timonen are the best two in Pennsylvania right now.
The Flyers also have 14 players signed in 2011-12, but have $15.1M in cap space right now, and nearly $26M in open cap space in 2012-13.

Much might happen from here to season starts...

You guys have upgraded your roster while the Blackhawks had to let a few guys go. You are also much deeper when it comes to forwards on the third and fourth line. Even the third line should contribute this season, maybe with a late aquisition.

If the following nine players constitute the first three lines, what would you let the fourth line look like? Let's assume they all have the same salary

Briere
Richards
Gagne
Carter
Hartnell
Van Riemsdyk
Giroux
Leino
Carcillo

Fourth line material:

Laperriere,
Shelley
Betts
Cote
Asham
Powe

Briere - 2C
Richards - 1C
Gagne - 3LW
Carter - 3C
Hartnell 2LW
Van Riemsdyk 1RW
Giroux - 1LW
Leino - 2RW
Carcillo - Traded for a 4th rounder

Fourth line material:

Laperriere - 4RW
Shelley - Expensive overpaid 13th forward
Betts - 4C
Cote - Phantoms
Asham - Not on the team
Powe - 4LW
you forgot: Nodl - 3RW

this is hoping Carle and Boosh are traded for a goalie, maybe Khabibulin? LOL

Yeah, I'm mildly surprised by the Pens signing Michalek AND Martin.

I don't think either of those guys is a No.1 and neither one of them is going to replace Gonchar's PP wizardry. Still though, Martin/Michalek/Orpik/Letang/Goligoski is a pretty nice top-5, ours is better, but we have the ****show in goal.

This post fails so hard. I expected more from you, mike.

Carter leads our team in goals 2 seasons in a row, but giving him $6 is out of the question?

Carter had 7 points (5 goals) in 12 playoff games with 2 bad feet this postseason.

Just 9 guys signed, but $35M committed. If Gagne and Carter both get resigned, we could have $45M committed to 11 guys going into this year, needing to resign JVR, Giroux, and Coburn.

Ugly.

Unless Gagne has a really good year, I see him not being resigned (unless he decides to go below $4mil a year and move down the depth chart).

This sucks.

I think it'll take 5/30 to ink Carter and 3/13 to ink Gagne. Not sure we can do that anymore.

Giroux is due for a new contract after this season as well. Your scenario above has him 2 years away from a new deal.

Looking at capgeek I think trading Carle is one of the best options because Carle and Coburn will need new deals at the same time. You can't keep both.

Oops, even better. Gagne, Carter, AND Giroux, plus a few stragglers and $15M to do it because there is no bonus cushion next year.

I'm not too worried about Leino becoming a PPG player that needs to get paid all of a sudden. He had a great playoffs, but so did Fernando Pisani once. He's clearly 4th on the priority list, anyway.

Leino is essentially filler ... He'll get $1.25 or so. If he develops into someone that needs to be paid $3M or something like that, then they'll have to choose him or Gagne.

Assuming a 3 mill increase might even be a little optimistic considering the economy isn't showing strong signs of recovery.

I don't think we're totally ****ed just because we didn't cripple ourselves with NMCs this time, so when this season implodes, we'll just be back to where we are right now except we won't get much for Carle.

Nah, the USD will collapse, the CAD will go to 1.20 and HRR will skyrocket. ;-)
