Oh I agree with you there. He isn't a 3-4 guy on most teams and that's fact. The only reason I said he will be is because of what our defense looks like now. We have to sign another D-man to replace Tallinder/Lydman and bring in a PP specialist.

Thinking about this more, I might have signed Bergeron over Leopold. Still, it's something.

I'm not thrilled by this signing, but I wasn't thrilled by the Montador signing and he ended up to be a solid if unspectacular player for us (excluding that West coast swing).

The problem is we don't need a solid, unspectacular guy. We need a guy who we can play against the best of the best. We had two of those guys we let get away, and we don't have a replacement for them. Who do you put out there with Myers to protect a 1 goal lead? Mike Weber??

3 years for Leopold? 3 years?! Yet we wouldn't go 3 years for Lydman?! Ming boggling signing. Our defense is currently Myers and 6 bottom pairing defensemen.

I'm with Jame. I was less pissed off with doing nothing than seeing they did THIS.

As long as the price is decent, it's an OK signing. Still, it's like the Montador signing last year. Regier loses a free agent (in that case, Spacek), then signs someone that's a downgrade as a replacement.

This team still needs a blueliner that can eat No. 2 minutes.

My thoughts:

Yes, he's softer than either Dirk or Loods. However, he's MUCH better than them offensively and plays a sound positional game. Also been a minutes eater the last few years, playing 20-25 min in Florida per game.

Is he a top 4 guy? Probably not on a good team or a team deep on D. Sabres aren't real deep on D, so I think there's a CHANCE he gets on the 2nd pairing. Not a great signing, not a lousy one. Pretty much strikes me as a typical Darcy move on a typical Sabres defenseman.

However, for the love of all that is holy --- keep him away from Montador. Don't need 2 guys pinching all the time.

Any word on money yet?

Also, does anyone else think Regier treated himself to a two-hour Chinese food break after his big signing?

This, combined with knowing that a 3rd year was the deal breaker for Lydman...

Un ****ing believable.

I agree with you. We always seem to end up landing the same type of guy every year, losing players of higher caliber.

I'm all for letting Weber into the lineup next season, but not as a top-pairing D-man. We need to address these needs instead of pushing unspectacular players into roles they shouldn't be in.

this notion that he's "really good offensively" needs to end...

He scores around 25 pts a year and gets PP time everywhere he goes.... Tallinder scored 20 pts without a lick of PP time.

Leopold is the ultimate piece of uselessness. He doesn't do ANYTHING good... he's an average defensemen. Who would be the #5/6 on most teams

From an outsider's view, you guys couldn't possibly get softer than what you had on the blueline last year. Leopold's not a banger, but he's a solid puckmover who can play on the second pairing. I mean really-you guys would rather have Bergeron? Come on now.....The problem here is this is a lateral move. Where's the improvement on the blueline which IMO is this team's biggest issue (that and a competant back-up).

Were you happy with the way the Sabres protected leads in the playoffs? I'm not thrilled with the signing, but Lydman and Tallinder left a lot to be desired too.

Did Leopold screw over your fantasy team one year or something? He's nowhere near as bad as you're making him out to be.

Well obviously that sucked, but it was the first time they blew a 3rd period lead all season. It came at the wrong time, but I wouldn't throw them under the bus just for that.

But that being said, what we have now is certainly not an improvement, and that remains the point. We'd be lucky to even hold 1 3rd period lead with the defense we have right now.

So how many 5/6/7 defensemen does this team have now, 10? Myers is alone on an island.

Coming from someone who watched most of the Pens playoff games last year, he was pretty damn good...I don't hate this signing at all.

Leopold is a wussy. He's a step down from Tallinder in terms of non-confrontational, puck moving/skating defenseman. He's soft.

Comments from Leopold's Agent

http://blogs.buffalonews.com/sabres/...Sabres+Edge%29
Quote:
"Darcy Regier, the GM, contacted me pretty early and expressed an interest, and they identified Jordan as a guy they followed closely and thought would be a good fit," Leopold's agent, Ben Hankinson, said by phone. "Jordan also had identified Buffalo before July 1 as being a great fit, too. Once I talked to Darcy, we got the deal done pretty quick. It was, I think, a decision that was made for the right reason for both sides.

"Kind of looking at where he might fit in, kind of a good hockey market, good team, moving in the right direction. He has Thomas Vanek, who he friends with, on the team. He played in Florida, he played in Pitt last year, and I think he went to a nontraditional hockey market to a really good team. I think this is a good combination. Itís not a top-end salary-structured team, but a good fit where he can play a big role and hopefully help these guys make a good run this year."
