I knew he wouldn't uproot his family again, but I was secretly hoping for him to sign with the Rangers (for personal reasons)

Good on Saku

I wonder if they are going to announce Koivu as their new captain.

That would be a very shortsighted decision. I think they're gonna go with Getzlaf, but maybe they'll go with a rotating captaincy or something...

Good deal for Anaheim. Not too expensive and not too long.

Good luck Saku.

I'm happy for Koivu, he seems to have settled in quite well in Anaheim.

How is 2.5 per too much to offer? I don't think there's a team in the league that would have turned him down if he was willing to sign for 2.5 a year.

It's not only about the money with Saku returning to Montreal. As much as I liked him while he was here, this isn't his team anymore, and many fans would equate him returning with Captain Saku which isn't nor should be the case.

Sorry,

Habs actually have two center man ahead of Saks at this point, he would be slotted at 3rd line center? Is that how you want to remember Koivu? Not me, first or second and contributing, leading etc.. He was my favorite Hab while he was here and I will always respect his work, but , there is not room for him here anymore.

Koivu:

52 points, 19 goals, in 71 games played. 2.5 million.

Gomez:

59 points, 12 goals, in 78 games played. 7.3 million.

Gomez = more ice time and better linemates.

Koivu = less ice time and worse linemates.

He could replace Gomez.

To me it doesn't matter if he's the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th line center as long as he is able to contribute every night like he showed last year. He put up identical numbers to Gomez yest costs 5 million less. Even if he was the 3rd line center on the Habs, he would be the best 3rd line center in the league and I doubt Koivu really cares what the media thinks of him or his role or he wouldn't have stayed in Montreal as long as he did.
