In a vacuum, this is a very nice deal. O'Donnell and Bartulis/rookie would have looked very nice to start the season. Cut down on the wear and tear of Pronger and Timonen. Help a youngster's D game come along. $1 mil is okay and a 1-year deal is superb.

For some additional salt and vinegar in our wounds, however, consider if Holmgren signed O'Donnell and one of Nabakov/Turco/Mason, put his feet up and called it a FA period. I would have been thrilled.

Kind of curious, O'Donnell can hit like a train right?

Not at 39 years old, but he's tough as nails.

On my blog I wrote that he should serve the same purpose that Ian Laperriere does as a forward

Agree 75% would I be too greedy if I asked for a 2nd/3rd line forward added to the list?

nice addition, saw this guy A LOT with anaheim and some last year with the kings. he is slowing down a little but as a number 6/7 you have to like him. age has not affected his durability over a season, guy is tough, shoots the puck hard and is a PRO. good value here, much better than the Shelley signing obviously, which was dumb. i guess if cote and asham are gone, OK, i see the need, but why not just bring back Asham then?

Just like the Meszaros deal and the Coburn signing, I'm okay with this on its own. But coupled with those other moves (and the Shelley signing) it's a lot to commit all at once.

Who are the actual UFAs that we've signed since Briere? Jason Smith, Lappy, Emery, Boucher, O'Donnell, Shelley? Holmgren is scared to sign any big names on the market and trades for all of them.

O'Donnell reminds me of when the Flyers signed Jay Wells....it's a good pick up for the money and terms. He has slowed down though but should be a good mentor and locker room presence.

I tend to agree with you but he decided to add a really good defenseman instead of a goalie for now. Meszaros could likely replace either Carle or Coburn - more likely Carle since Coburn was just re-signed. I expect that a trade will be made for Carle at some point before the season begins. Either that or somebody takes him for picks and we sign Turco.

I agree, that's what you'd want to do... ideally a 3rd liner that can win draws, in fact.

Then, we would likely have some change left over and be in a position to make an acquisition during the year. I don't understand the pressure to have our 3rd line solved in July.

Don't know how much he has left in the tank but i loved him when he was with the Ducks. Honest, tough irishman who keeps it simple, i think he'll be fine on the bottom pairing even if he is slow. He was never that fast to begin with.

He and Pronger played together when the ducks won the cup. Very nasty to play against

Actually reading that has made me 180 on this signing. If Pronger specifically called him to come, that makes me feel more confident. Plus if they're friends already you know Pronger will work with him hard without any conflict (I'd assume).

Yep, you're right. I don't understand why he's so scared of paying market price for the impact players but instead takes on overpaid contracts and gives up picks so willingly.

If that happens, I am perfectly fine with the moves made yesterday (other than Shelley which was probably the dumbest, most useless move I have seen in my 30 years watching hockey....well, maybe other than Billy Tibbets

I would be perfectly fine with

Meszaros Pronger
Coburn Timonen
Bartulis Odonnell

Especially if we can get a better goalie than Leighton. When Ellis signed for the same down in TB I was really pissed!

Cause he is a moron and a terrible manager....there is more to building a team these days than throwing money around....prior to the cap Homer probably would have been awesome, with the cap he is horrible.

Sean O'Donnell picks up an extra $300,000 in GP/team playoff bonuses

So his caphit is $1,300,000

Because it's a bonus it won't count towards our cap though, right? Or how does that work?

I thought that there could only be bonuses in Entry Level contracts? Can any contract have them then I guess?

Just came here to LOL at anyone thinking this was good. OD proved this year he's washed up. 40-50 games in, he got on the level of Randy Jones, minus the "offensive upside" Jones apparently has. OD is a great leader but on the ice, he's slow, a turnover machine, and takes bad penalties at times. have fun
