Sheldon was one of my favorites as well. But you're thinking of the old Sheldon. The new Sheldon is banged up pretty bad, and not quite the player he used to be.

His D is not that horrible. He is not a defensive defensement but it's not that bad

The risk with Souray is that he played less than half the games in 2 of the past 3 years with Edm and had some surgery to his wrist and shoulder. If he is healthy (as he claims) I believe he brings more to the table that would help MTL than what Hamrlik provides. For one, the PP with Souray would be vastly improved and this would mean the end of MAB in MTL. He would also provide more toughness in the back-end.

Not even close, Souray has 2 years left and Hamrlik only 1, plus Souray is nowhere as durable as Hamrlik.

Hammer is miles ahead of Souray 5-on-5 (so is Spacek for that matter). The Habs instantly became a better team when Souray went to EDM and they signed Hammer instead.

Souray is aces on the PP, but that's not exactly an area of need for the Habs.

Hamrlik is expiring, Souray is not.

I think it was the same thought process that made Sutter sign Jokinen
