Looking at that defense i'm not sure why anyone says we need a #1. I'd rather have a team full of 5 #2/#3 defense.

confirms he took a hometown discount for lifestyle and team play reasons

seems like he was a huge canuck fan his whole life until he was drafted by the predators

if nothing else the canucks have acquired as quality an individual as you'll find in the league...all tsn broadcasts will now have pierre mcguire going off elegantly about how danny hamhuis is "a fine young man"

Thanks for the Heads-up.

Seems like he really wants to help us win. I really like this guy, taking a home town discount.

Hamhuis didn't ask Gillis to play a certain amount or anything - Gillis told him whoever plays well will play.

Who wears #2 will be decided by an arm-wrestling competition, lol.

From all I've been reading/hearing it really seems like Ballard and Hamhuis are very similar.

Not overly tall, both about 6feet, 210-ish, very physical when needed (both like hip checking), good puck moving d-men that are good at all aspects of D but aren't "offensive D-men" nor "defensive D-men", and are both durable.

They were even born 17 days apart.

Do we have a new set of "twins" on our team or what?

They both had their highest point totals in their rookie season as well, both in 05/06. Scary stuff.

if both hamhuis and ballard simply played the same way the played the last few seasons in the next few seasons, the canucks will be happy

there are no indications whatsoever that either player is on a downward trend

There are certainly a lot of similarites. Though I would say Ballard is more of a risk taking, offensive defenseman that likes to jump up in the rush, whereas Hamhuis seems to prefer the safe play.

It'll be interesting to see what type of point production we get out of these 2 in a very attack oriented, offensive system that gives the dmen the green light to jump up in the play. The Canucks coaching staff certainly doesn't seem to have a problem with their defensemen being very aggressive in the opposition's end.

There's no reason to believe the Canucks won't once again have the highest scoring defense in the NHL next season. I'm expecting the Canucks to once again lead the West in goals for.

This has to be a good week for Roberto Luongo. I'd be curious to hear his comments on the 3 big acquisitions this offseason to date. Malhotra, Hamhuis and Ballard should go a long way in getting the captain back on track.

Adding Hamhuis is so awesome, the depth the Canucks have on the blueline now is ridiculous. Trading Bieksa should add to the bottom 6 forwards, hopefully a physical grinding pest type player.

Couldn't agree with you more Parabola. I would rather not have to worry about the 1A guy getting hurt, and have that crush our chances.

5-6 #2/#3 guys are the way to go, IMO.

Carolina did it with a bunch of #4's and #5's, so I like our formula of stacking up on #2's and 3's.

Gillis on acquiring Hamhuis:
Quote:
Can you talk about Dan’s acquisition and how this all came about?

”It always happens pretty quickly with high-end players. It was one of the first calls we made this morning and it took us a while to get it done, but obviously we’re really pleased about getting a guy from British Columbia to come back here and play for the Canucks.”

There were a lot of reports that he took a lower offer to come here, what does that say to you as a franchise?

”We’re trying to compete for a Stanley Cup and ultimately players do have to do that if they want to be in that environment and we were thrilled that he was prepared to do that and look at our team as a contending team and was prepared to come here for less money.”

Fair to say that you now have to move someone on defence?

”We’re going to cross that bridge when the dust settles, we’ll have lots of opportunity. Last year we thought we had plenty of defencemen at the beginning of the season and ended up not having enough, so there’s lots of time to think about those issues.”

What do you like about Dan’s game?

”He a mobile defenceman who moves the puck. We think here he’ll have a great opportunity to put up more numbers, I think he’ll compete for a one-two spot if he plays his best, certainly a top-four guy and he’s going to get the chance to play in every situation.”
