I saw the same crap on CP while browsing through when Jokinen was signed... how stupid do you have to be to not notice that the Nucks were the 2nd best team offensively last year? Kinda like one poster here, 5H4RK5 or something, said we need one more scorer to be a contender

I think this is an unrealistic argument. Even if Canucks kept him after tryout, it likely would have been one year, he likely would have had a good year, and this likely would have been a re-signing at the same rate.

One team - believe it's San Jose — offered Malhotra $2.2 m a year

He keeps bringing up his goal totals. Since, you know, a 3rd line centre gets paid based purely on goal contributions.

So we paid a premium of 300,000 to make sure we landed him. Whatever.

With Hamhuis taking a paycut to sign here i'm fine with overpaying Malhotra by 300,000.

Exactly. From all the reports on TSN of Hamhuis getting offers of 6 years/30 million, we saved 500k per season from that and overpaid 300k per year or so for Malhotra. In the end we came out positive on the balance sheet.

Gillis said Manny Malhotra is comfortable playing on the wing if need be. #canucks
I can't believe Hosea even had to ask that question, tbh. It's not the reporters fault, just the idiot, narrow-minded fans.

You find buying a time machine unrealistic?

Michalek went for $4m to the Pengs (not the favoured Ottawa team).
Martin went for $5m to the Pengs as well.

I'd be just as happy with Michalek (RH ) as Hamhuis.

Cullen got 3.5M. 2.5M is just fine for Manny.

It's very clear that Gillis (or more likely Gillis channeling Aqulini, frankly, IMO) has a different perception of what needs to be done than some of the folks less-than-thrilled with the recent deals. Time will tell which perception is better grounded in reality.

Right now, as the team is constituted (and obviously that can change), I see it being lucky to get out of the first round.
Just curious, what do you think was the problem with the team and what should we have done to rectify it?

I think if Gillis happened to magically sign Sidney Crosby that Dado would say we have no room in our top 6 for a one-dimensional small forward.

No, buying one isn't really the issue. It's getting the plutonium through customs.

Malholtra was on my wishlist for the offseason but I'm a little concerned with the contract. That being said I like adding Malholtra to the 3rd line (center or wing). I had to laugh at Mcguire's really off base rant it was almost as good as the Jokinen debacle TSN had.

i'm becoming less negative towards this acquisition the more i think about it

if the canucks got malholtra for $1.5 million-$2 million/year, everybody on the board would be ecstatic for the canucks getting a solid big third line centre who is great on playoffs, kills penalties, and is a great team leader

the $2.5 million/year initially looks bad until you see the contracts being awarded to 3rd/4th liners today like nystrom, armstrong, and boogaard...once you see what the market value really is, and realize the sharks offered $2.2 million/year, it's much more palatable

If his current team, which knows his game better than anyone, is prepared to off that then his value can't be too far off at $2.5m.

Gillis on Malholtra:
Quote:
What do you like about Manny Malhotra?

Hes got size, character and hes a really good penalty killer, great on faceoffs and we wanted to get more size into our lineup at the forward position, weve got a lot of skill. Manny adds a dimension that we didnt have and clearly based on our penalty kill last year we had to improve in that area and hes a very good penalty killer.

In your mind can Manny play wing or is he more effective at centre?

Both, thats what we talked to him about before we signed him, whether he was comfortable playing wing if we had a young centreman in the middle and he said absolutely he was. Hes a real solid guy, good character, good leadership, so hes prepared to play at either position.
http://canucks.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=533601

In the video interview Gillis said there was room for young guys (read Hodgson) if he makes the team as there is flexibility.

I really like this signing. I think Malhotra brings a lot to the table. My only concern is that if he struggles for some reason, he will quickly become public enemy #1.

One thing I'm not sure has been mentioned is Malhotra seems like the type of player that could really thrive in AV's system. AV seems to be drawn to defensive-minded guys and is good at getting the most out of hard working, hard-nosed players. I think Malhotra will get more icetime here and I am cautiously optimistic that he could get career numbers.

Formula to make EVERYONE happy.

Bernier 2million + hamhuis savings 500k = 2.5mil malholtra

would you rather have bernier or malholtra?

I'm aware of how flawed the logic is.

A NTC for a player that could conceivably be a 2.5 million dollar fourth liner in a couple years?

It's a limited NTC. It's only a 3 year deal and I don't see him regressing that much that he all of a sudden only becomes a 15 point 4th liner. He's everything defensively that Ryan Johnson was supposed to be, and is way way better offensively.
