Oilers and Foster

hey guys, Oilers fan here.

Just wondering what could you say about Foster. I'm really liking this deal; just want to find out a bit more on him.

Thanks guys

1.8 per is a bit of an overpayment. Hell of a shot, but kind of a defensive liability. Still, would have liked to seen him resigned here. Good guy, character guy. And that shot from the point...don't want one of my goalies sitting in front of that.

Heck of a shot from the point. Slow, very slow skater. Makes a better 4th line forward than a defenseman.

Pros
Booming shot
Gives you a great option on the PP
PPQB
Righty shot
Big
Nice guy

Cons
Mobility issues
Defensive liability
Disappointing physicality given his size.

Overall bottom pairing dman/PP specialist.

Wish we could have kept him, solid low pairing d-man with a BOOMING shot.

Ohlund has a very hard shot, and I've heard Hedman has one too, although I've never seen him actually take it. This move opens up the point to put Hedman on the power play, where he belongs.

Believe it or not, Hedman has probably the best wrister Ive ever seen, and Ive watched alot of hockey. It just comes down to will he ever use it?

Just curious, why do you guys think 1.8M is an overpayment? Is there a part of his game that he is THAT bad at? Boogard just got signed for 1.65M and he hasn't scored a goal in 4 years and plays 4 mins a night, Shelley got 1.1M, and he is getting about 1/3rd of the price of Gonchar (another offensive d-man)...is he that much worse in his own zone than Gonchar? I was only able to watch the bolts about 4-5 times this year on Centre Ice so don't know much

I think Foster is a solid #5 and power play quarterback. His passes were setting up Stammer's PP goals all year. The penalty kill had to respect his shot and him passing over to Stammer which is the reason our power play did so well last year. He also seemed like a very intelligent player from what I heard during his mic'd up sessions during the games last year.

I don't think he's as bad defensively as some people. He isn't overly physical, but he will throw a crushing body check occasionally when it presents itself. His mobility is probably his biggest issue and being too casual with the puck when being pressured.

Yeah, that is a product of a bad GM making a bad signing more than it is with Foster being a good signing. I don't think Fosters deal is atrocious, but his deficiencies are plentiful.

Basically he played better as a forward than a d-man - Even better than Tanguay. Great guy, excellent booming shot on the PP but was like a number of our d-men - mobility challenged.
