Center depth, at worst a good center for the farm.

He is for Manitoba. The canucks want to surround the younger forwards on the Moose with some talent.

For Mike Gillis' sake, I hope this isn't the only deal he makes today.

According to Bob Mackenzie, it's an NHL deal. He had a deal signed in the Swiss league with an out for an NHL deal. If he doesn't make the team, I see him heading back to Europe.

He was with San Antonio the last several years. Highly skilled guy with injury problems. Great playmaker with a good shot. Had a knack to be in the right place at the right time for game winners. Tended to float quite a bit as it seems like he was very unhappy playing in the AHL for so long. Not much defensively.

Like another poster said, It's a one way deal. My guess is he'll be a 4th line centre that comes in and out of the lineup.

I saw that's it a one-way, but that just has to do with salary IIRC. I still think he'll spend the year in Manitoba, but TBH I don't know a thing about this guy, so who knows.

The Canucks may also have a deal with Manitoba where they take a good part of that salary if he plays in Manitoba as with Jason Krog.

This is a Krog/Stastny type move. Center depth for the big club, but more than likely to be a top line player in Manitoba.

Sounds like he would not accept being in the AHL long term, but one way money might make it work. Aquabucks!

No harm to the signing. Doubt he plays more than 15 games in the NHL this year but who knows.

This is either a bad signing, or they have some agreement where he'll go back to Europe and they don't pay him, or else he has some connection to someone in the organization and he will be willing to be a good soldier in Winnipeg. Looks like a waste of half a million to me though.

How else do you want Gillis to spend .500k? You won’t sign too many elite scorers with that kind of dough.

Don't spend it? I don't see this guy making the team, what's the point?

Then they get an elite forward for the AHL team.. It's exactly like Krog when he was signed.. offered a 1 way to bring him over from europe.

It's not just about the NHL team.. the Canucks want to provide talent for the Moose as well.

“They called pretty early,” said Perrault, a Montreal native, who's played summer league hockey with Canucks winger Alex Burrows. “It's a Canadian team, they are a really good team and I was looking for a one-way deal. They told me they were trying to get me the last two years in a trade with Phoenix. I'm pretty excited to get a fresh start with a good team.”
Hmmmmmm....A little inside knowledge there?

Quote:
“That (one-way) is what the marketplace commanded and to have a depth forward that you have real confidence in who can come up and play, that's what we were prepared to do,” said Gillis.
That sounds like Gillis expects him to be in Manitoba if he doesn't make the team.

I was fully expecting Gillis to make a move like this - Perrault is a perfect candidate for a one-way deal because he won't have to clear re-entry waivers (because he's an AHL vet) to be called up. The Canucks were in desperate need of centre depth last season. He fills that hole while giving the Moose a pretty good player.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Canucks do the same thing with a defenceman or two.

If he doesn't make the team and he clears waivers then just like that he's our number 5 center (maybe number 6 with Rypien potentially being number 5). It adds depth once again to a position that we aren't that strong in. We've got the wings covered pretty good and now it looks like our depth on defence is starting to look good as well.

Without SOB and Bieksa we've got potentially 8 solid NHL defencemen (if you include Sweatt) and that's not even counting Baumgartner who can play a game or two if needed.

Ideally we'll add another defencemen or two that can play some minutes if needed but we've got a pretty solid top four in terms of health concerns so maybe we won't need to go 10 deep this season.

I still think we should aim to go 10 deep (including Baumer and Sweatt) which means we likely need to add one more defencemen (Hamhuis, Ehrhoff, Edler, Ballard, Salo, Rome, Alberts, Sweatt, Baumgartner).
