They may be trying to terminate his contract outright. I think there is a case that he has breached his SPC by harming the reputation of the team and impairing his own trade value. The CBA requires that he be waived first, but if he clears I wouldn't put it past the team to call for his SPC to be torn up.

I will be watching with interest.

Quite the opposite. Maybe trying to acquire a top dman or top forward now with all the cap space cleared.

The story is also now up on TSN.

It would seem, if the message is if you're not a team player then you're not going to be on this team, has been sent. The keys here being about the team and being a player.

on TSN

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=326373

maybe trying to dump the contract and get the 5.4 mill cap hit off the books............not likely anyone picks him up because of the cap hit... guess the offers were not very good and tambo would prefer the cap space........although it could be a pre-cursor to a trade....just like POS

what is the possibility that there is some team out there that would be willing to pick him up on re-entry waivers at half the cost and then complete a trade with the oil in which the re-entry claim would play a part in the value of players involved. Kind of a way around not paying part of his salary as per the CBA

All dependent on souray not being claimed by another team, so maybe not plausible.

The buyout period is over is it not? If no one claims him he goes to okc?

Interesting thought. Wouldn't that just hear the Oilers reputation more in the league amongst the players though? Especially with him being relatively from all accounts well liked within the brotherhood of the NHLPA.

Alright, I don't like this move.

I find it hard to believe that Souray has no value what so ever.

The team picking him up would only be on the hook for half his salary, am I correct?

According to Spector...

"I suspect the Oilers, after shopping Souray without success, have found a team to take him on re-entry waivers. Each get $2.7 cap hit...?"

I think NYI will pick him up, aren't they like 14mil away from the cap floor?

Also, their D is laughable.

You will soon find out, as within 24 hours we will know who he went to and what in perhaps we could have targeted that makes sense. If no one picks him up, then that spells out everything to us armchair GMs.

Only if they send him there. But, yes, the buyout period is over. The only way they could buy him out this year is if someone signed one of their RFAs to an offer sheet. Personally, I don't think he's a realistic buyout option anyway. They'd save $3M on the cap this year and next, but they'd have a $1.5M cap hit for the following 2 seasons.
