Since our D is pretty much as is, focus on the front and, seeing Ryan may not want to play with the Ducks, http://www.thefourthperiod.com/news/ana100702.html, make a pitch/package and move him over the our Sharks. He'd be excellent beside big Joe and either Heater or Patty.
We are definitely short 2 D men if front of the two backup goalies we are going with next season (although, Greiss does deserve the chance to show if he can and will be a number 1). With Huskins and Wallin on our D as our #5 & #6, you again are close as these two are a huge drop from the rest of the pack. And, Demers is even a work in progress and brings more than these two, although some may dispute this.

What is DW's issue? This year it didn't seem like any of these top flight dmen signed for ridiculous amounts (Volchenkov, aside, on term. I didn't want DW to chase him.)
If none of these dmen wanted to come play for us, that's one thing but I just don't believe it. I'm sure at least one of them would have wanted to come play for us - shoot, Nitty pretty much said once the Sharks issued the news that Nabby wasn't re-signing that that pretty much convinced him not to re-sign w/ the Bolts.

If we do not improve the D, we have absolutely no shot next season. Don't delude yourself. Our D was taken advantage of last year because it was slow, and unreliable. It is now, undoubtedly, slower, and more unreliable. Our top-6 has not improved either, and it was slow and defensively suspect.
I'm not worried because I know DW is going to make that trade for a defensemen.

The roster is essentially full (especially on D) so whether he trades or signs, he still has to move someone to make room. That's why he does trades, because he gets better value for his assets that way.
The Sharks would have had to dump salary to sign a top-4 UFA defenseman, but to trade for one they'll have to give up a quality asset. I'd rather move Huskins and Mitchell for picks and sign a Hamhuis/Volchenkov/Michalek/Kubina than lose Clowe or Setoguchi for a Kaberle.

He needs to, but the longer he waits, the harder it gets because other GM's read his hand and know he needs to do something. He isn't the only buyer out there for a defenseman either. Buffalo lost some defense yesterday and the Ducks, Habs, and I think Ottawa are still shopping for a defenseman.
On the one hand I appreciate that he isn't going to overpay and has a team salary structure he doesn't want to screw up. I think I heard there are only 4 teams that have made the playoffs every year since the lockout. But on the other, at some point you have to reevaluate your hand and determine if your assessment might be off the market price. That's why he dumped Ehrhoff last year. He knew he had to move someone during the summer and waited too long. Its why we brought in Rivet and traded assets. He could have had Roman Hamerlik at a fair price in FA without trading assets but didn't like the price and we skated an ill-prepared Josh Gorges instead.
I am not fully second guessing his hold the line policy because he has to balance salary and assets. But if we go with this defense, he also has to accept the consequence on the ice which might dictate and overreaction at the trade deadline.

There are still good FA defensemen out there. Corvo and Mitchell would be nice.

I agree that they are upgrades ignoring the injury to Mitchell, but at this point, it seems we've walked by several FA's that fit the budget. So DW true to his statement is focused on a trade.
I'd pick him up off re-entry waivers, but the Sharks would have close to the last claim. Of course that won't happen.

This is one of my big complains about DW. He refuses to "overpay" for a FA, but he has no problem sending away picks, prospects and roster players for an expensive addition. He could very easily fill a hole with a reasonably priced FA even if it meant having to move someone like Mitchell or not resigning someone next year, but, for whatever reason, he refuses to do so.

I don't think you can say he refuses to overpay for a free agent. Both Wallin and Huskins were about to become free agents and he certainly overpaid for them. It could even be argued Niittymaki was an overpayment but at least he has some upside while there really was/is no reason to expect any upside out of Wallin/Huskins.
