Does that mean we'd get him at half price?

No, that's not how it works.

You can't claim your own player on waivers. The Oilers aren't involved in the claim process. The first dibs go to Toronto.

Maybe it's just the big old middle finger from Tambellini to Souray.

or, it's the Oilers showing him that NOBODY wants him and he needs to change his attitude and come back and play well and then he'll trade him.

...I'm going with the finger.

From capped out to cap floor in a matter of days. Tambo deserves some props.

Okay, I'll be the one to say it:

Does this mean Tambellini is gearing up to offer Kovalchuk a 8 or 9 million/year contract?

What is the timeline here. How long is he on waivers and then when do the re-entry waivers kick in. Will this all take place in a few days?

I have to think some kind of deal is in place. Most likely on re-entry waivers. Making this deal now, not even 24 hours into free agency seems kind of rushed unless something is there. Guess we will see in the next couple days.

Maybe there's something I'm missing here, but I just don't get this. We couldn't have traded him for a third rounder or anything?

As far as I know, re-entry waivers only take place when a player is called up. To be called up, a player has to be sent down, which is different than being waived.

24 hours. Once he clears, they can decide to asign him to the minors. Only if they do that can they put him on re-entry waivers. Then it's another 24 hours before he clears.

I am completely surprised about this, just last offseason this guy was a top 20-25 defenseman in the entire league and now he has completely fallen off the map, i figured that he would hold some value. I'm just glad that Tambo didn't cave and take on a Reddenlike contract, i'm pretty sure that somebody will pick up Souray.

Only if he doesn't mind playing on the same line with Spezza and Jagr.

What is likely happening is Tambellini is seeing if anybody will take Souray's salary off his hands before trading him for another bad contract (a la O'Sullivan)

It's not the pre-cap environment anymore. A third round pick and 5.4 million in cap space would have been a huge coup.

More than likely a deal would have been for a similar troubled player making about 5 million, but there weren't any suitors.

As unlikely as that is, it would be amazing to see the Oilers come out of nowhere and pick up the biggest free agent on the market.

But I think Kovie wants to win, and the Oilers don't want to spend that much.

Yes, but there should also be some recognition that the cap situation was never as bad as some made it out to be. All things equal, it is obviously better to have more capspace. However, because of waivers, if you have a deep enough pocket owner, you can almost have a different cap than everyone else.

if one of the reasons we got rid of him was his attitude does it make sense to send him to the minors were all the Oilers young up and coming players are? wont he "poison" that poll as well?

Wouldn't it be funny if we controlled where he went so he was in the worst place to play possible? "Hey Sheldon, we sent you to Atlanta via waivers. Sorry!"

everyones going to say no but ill humor the fantasy:

Kovalchuk - Hall - Hemsky
Penner - Gagner - Eberle
MPS - Horcoff - Brule
Jones/Thug - Fraser - Stortini

Whitney - Gilbert
Smid - Foster
Vandermeer - Strudwick/Petry

Kahbibulin

that team probably makes the playoffs next year.
(but the D would suck big time.. as usual)

trade Cogliano for a bag of pucks

Not gonna lie, I am thrilled. Tambo has been working magic the past few weeks - I think he's got another trick up his sleeve here.
