Might be just trying to get to the salary floor... But still don't see why they would do something like that. That team is far away from contention and while they do have some nice pieces it won't be for several years that they'll even have a sniff at the playoffs.

If he goes to the New York Islanders, then it will prove that he is playing just for the money and what he said about wanting to win the Stanley cup was a bunch of bull - his credibility with hockey fans will take a nose dive.

The only way to save his credibility with fans is to sign for less with a contending team - Montreal I think is the most sensible option everything considered.

I won't post all the links .. but if you follow Dreger and Lebrun on Twitter you will find links to other twitter accounts about the story.

Apparently Charles Wang thinks if he has Kovalchuk he can get a new arena deal approved.

Makes a lot of sense.

They really need a new arena because Nassau is garbage. They need something to bring the fans back to the games, it is a pretty storied post-expansion franchise. It was pretty damn embarrassing that there were more Habs fans than Isles fans during that huge snow storm.

the islanders might not be a good team now but they will be and likely soon..when you sign a 10 year deal you dont just look at next season...you look at the possibilities going forward in the short, medium, and long term

where he loses credibility is in signing for that much because any team signing him for that kind of money is tying a lot of salary in one place....and will have less to bring in other impact players or pay existing impact players...

i doubt he gets that much...and if he does the islanders are crazier than him

Didn't they sign Yashin to a similar contract ? LOL. I know, Yashin was one of those Russian enigma players ie a head case, Kovalchuk isn't. That's alot of bucks over alot of years though.

Go to hockeysfuture.com and look at their prospect list. They have TONS of nice pieces. They're not going to be good within 2 years, but after that, they'll be VERY good. Plus, Kovalchuk would be a good ambassador for Kabanov. Also they have, Nino Neidereiter, Tavares, Okposo, Bailey, Brock Nelson, Calvin de Haan, Travis Hamonic, Kirill Petrov.

This is a very good team coming up. Garth Snow & his scouts have been doing some tremendous drafting since he took over.

Milbury signed Yashin to 10 years, 87.5 million ... this year is the last year of the buyout of that contract.

That's what the Thrashers offer looked like before he was traded. He won't bite, not with the Islanders.

Scary thing is that they have enough young piece and cap room that they can sign Kovalchuk AND Frolov ... Hard part is convincing these guys to sign with the Islanders.

If he can't find a contending team to sign a long term contract at 10million a year, sign a short term contract with a contending team for less money. Example: to Montreal for 8-9 million for 2-3 years - he will probably make more money selling Montreal Canadiens jerseys and other endorsements than from his contract with the Isles.

Obviously, i'm a habs fan, but I really hope for the NYI it's less. i know I should hope its more so they **** themselves up, but I hope they can settle in the 8.5-9 mil range. Giving kovalchuk 10 mil over 10 is just wrong. Great player, elite, but he should be in the crosby range at best(8.7 mil). I really hope for the NYI and for hockey in general the offer is less than the rumoured 10 per year over 10 years. Just terrible.

If they do sign Kovalchuk with a 10m cap hit, they're going to be sorry for it when all those good young players need 2nd and 3rd contracts...

I'm pretty sure his options are rather limited in terms of being offered similar contracts.
I don't see too many teams putting that much on the table for him.
So, we'll see if it's all about the bens or not.

Euh no, Isles still have over $2M on cap to Yashin until 2014-15.

10 years in New York at a $100 million and I guarantee the Islanders still never come close to winning the Cup.

lol, as if Kovalchuck was the missing piece they needed. Unbelievable how they wouldn't allocate those kind of dollars to several positions, considering how their last overpaid Russian worked out.
