Amazing that the Leafs & the Oilers have to pay penalties when they didn't even make the playoff... I guess we should not complain too much...

So if I'm reading this correctly, this means that those nine teams will have a cap reduction by those amounts. So Chicago's cap limit is $55M and not $59 M and so on?

Ok lets just say we go over the cap by twice the amount (60 Million so, 120 million total) .... we could easily win the cup!

And have cap space of 0 next year (thus annulling the season?).

I'd do it.

Would explain why they we're so eager to drop Versteeg.

In all honesty, I think it's hilarious the Leafs got hit with this penalty despite their terrible ness. Another thing I find funny is their thread over there about this, no one seems to know the exact amount of cap space they have. Not to mention they think they can just rid themselves of Kaberle, Grabovski via trade and not receive at the very least some significant salary in return. Finger in the AHL I think everyone expects to happen, mind you if they do trade Kabs and don't receive a defenseman in return it's entirely possible he does play for the Leafs full time next year.

There are a lot of rules but the lawyers who wrote the CBA did a pretty good job and there are very few loopholes, the only one being the 12 year retirement contracts with weasel years tacked on at the end.

If you want to see a cap system thats got really crazy rules & full of loopholes check the NBA

Here's a little nugget of information; the Toronto Maple Leafs pay Tyler Bozak a whooping 3,725 mil.
True story.

Not sure how you'd manage 60 million in bonuses reached though.

Like we paid Price 2.2 million? Or John Tavares had a salary of 3.75 mill?

I was being sarcastic. I know it's bonuses.

Sigh, it's bonuses. That was my point. Bozak didn't make that money, neither did Price. He had potential to hit that mark but didn't. Unless I'm mistaken and he did hit it. I didn't check, but figured a guy half season in AHL would have a hard time.

Oh, we agree. It's just that the bonus dollars are very high and were easily reachable. Weird situation because I don't see why they would structure his deal that way. For Tavares it's understandable because of his draft ranking but for FA college kid? I find it peculiar.

Well, Bozak was a sought after free agent so they gave him these bonuses to entice him to sign in Toronto I guess. He spent half the year in the AHL so I doubt he managed to hit them. It is a lot though, hopefully for TO it isn't easy to attain cuz useless cap hit wasted. For us, I hope it's dumb stuff like 'games played bonus' lol

I'd trade $4 million in cap space any day to get a Cup.

And I don't understand this thread, what are we supposed to discuss? They already lost a bunch of players.

nope. bonuses are capped for one and for another, when accounting for bonuses when calculating the cap theyre counted such that they are deemed to be achieved until proven otherwise (ie. a guy cant get a games played bonus for 50 game if he's injured for 60 so at that point, that bonus isnt counted). Also the cap cant be exceeded for bonuses past a certain amount (i think its either 10% or 7.5%).
