Brad Richardson Avoids Arbitration, Signs 1 year, 900k Deal

Quote:
In actual Kings news… Brad Richardson was the Kings’ only restricted free agent eligible to file for salary arbitration, and he did so today. The Kings and Richardson are still allowed to reach agreement on a contract, but if they don’t, an arbitration hearing will be held sometime between July 20-Aug. 5 in Toronto. Richardson had a cap hit of $587,500 last season.

He deserves a decent raise, nothing really unexpected, I am sure the arbitration hearing will be fair if it is needed.

Does anyone know who gets to decide on the length of the contract if it goes to arbitration? I seem to recall that it was the Kings that got to pick the 2 year deal with Cammy?

I believe if the player elects to go to arbitration that the team gets to pick the term.

My question is WHY it was needed. Have DL/JS just been too busy to make the guy a decent offer?

IIRC, in arbitration under the CBA,(unlike binding arbitration in a legal setting) the arbitrator chooses to go with the numbers from one side or the other, he cant pick his own number or a number in the middle. CBA experts, am I correct in this regard?

Seems to me Richie should have been taken care of along time ago. Maybe we need that extra few hundred thousand to throw over to Kovalchuk

Nothing really unexpected? You expected arbitration? I sure didn't.

1.5M would be an over payment, 2M would be ridiculous.

At 25 years old, David Moss put up 39 points in 81 games during the 08-09 season. He then signed a 3 year deal worth 1.3M.

Richardson is 25 years old, and just put up 27 points in 81 games.

Daniel Paille is another comp. He just got a 2 year deal at 1M.

Hell, Jack Johnson only got 1.4M.

No, I meant exactly what he thought I meant This whole season I thought Richardson would end up filing for arbitration. This is just the normal steps, nothing new. These deals are done in between Solomon and agents, the players are rarely involved other than to say "no" or "okay". Richie has established a role on the team and had a really good year and is looking to get a NHL salary of an established/useful player (which is usually $1 million+). Arbitration is standard in this case and we can still negotiate with him till then, but even if it goes to arbitration, he won't be making anywhere near $2 million so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Nice!!! Exactly who I was going to list as a comparable.

Others: Petr Prucha (27 yrs old; 22P in 79G) = $1.2m cap hit
Taylor Pyatt (28 yrs old; 23P in 74G) = $1.0 cap hit

Richie filing for arbitration is not a slap in the King's face and is the right thing for him to do. This is a non-issue piece of news...

Arbitration =/= unhappiness. Just a future option for a player to ensure they get paid fairly based on their production and role for a team. It is just there so the Kings can't lowball him and offer like $700k or something, given that he is a much older RFA and that offer would be acceptable per the CBA, but Rich deserves more and he can't leave the Kings, they would just be allowed to lowball him for the sake of lowballing him. Arbitration gives him the ability to get his $1-1.2 million like he deserves.

Richardson is Derek Armstrong part II , Eric Belanger part III ...

he was terific last season when you're not expecting much of anything from him other than being a hustl'in utility player ...

to start expecting more and to pay him more than $1.5 Mil and he'll turn into yet another whipping boy sooner rather than later IMO.

NOTE: I liked Armstrong & Belanger, so don't take this as a knock on Richardson, but he is what he is, to start thinking he'll be our #2 center answer {hi Kurrilino} and I think you're in for a big let down, just like the other two guys who were forced into that situation when they shouldn't have been.

If Parse got 900K, then I'm thinking something between 1.2M -1.75M sounds reasonable.

Let's just say this: Richie was more valuable to our team this year than JJ was to us last year.

This, double is fair for him, and thats probably what it will be. I think Dean and Jeff haven't had a lot of time for this, so it's a formality for Richie just to make sure he gets a raise. It'll probably get done in advance of the court date, I guarantee that this was more or less something they wanted to wait on to see how UFA's and trades shook out. the staff loves him, and richie is a good kid, this won't get super messy.

edit; just two add two more cents, I think he's one of those guys that acknowledges that Dean went out and gave up a 2nd to get him, sort of salvaging him from potential mediocrity in Colorado. (potential because I actually think the current regime would have played the **** out of him).
