ISS listed the Isles as one of the winners of this year's draft..although I hate talking about "winners" of a draft this soon, I like what they said about the Isles, especially the last line.
New York Islanders
The Islanders may have hit home runs with their second and third picks, taking Brock Nelson from Minnesota High School and Kirill Kabanov, the mysterious Russian. Nelson, many scouts said, is just as good as Nick Bjugstad, but is more developed. Bjugstad seemed to slow down at the end of the year, while Nelson was as consistent as ever.
Later in the third round, the Islanders would select Shattuck-St Mary's High School winger Jason Clark at 82nd overall, a 6'2" monster with the potential to grow into his frame and round out his skill set with more seasoning in the US Collegiate program. There is one thing that is for certain, the New York Islanders continue the steady rise back to being a contender with Garth Snow at the helm.
Refreshing to read afte all of this Kovalchuk nonsense. Stay the course Isles (and Isles fans), whether they get Kovalchuk or not, keep building through the draft, make smart trade and FA signings, and we are on our way to becomming a winning franchise again.
This should surprise nobody at this point, they've nailed every draft since 2006 and the dividends are slowly trickling up to the NHL level.
Yup. 2006 is teh first post-Milbury draft. They did pretty good. JJ is pushing for a spot, Rhett had a very, very nice college career and developed well so far, Okposo, and although it was Teddy's pick, Andy MacDonald has also developed really nicely.
One thing of note is the Isles ECHL team is not where prospects go to die and also they were one of teh first teams to scout the USHL heavily.
