1 year, $1.6 million.

We now have 9 defensemen on one-way contracts for a combined cap hit of $23.7 million.

Bye bye Bieksa, whether it's for Filatov or a puu-puu platter of AHL players.

Eh I think both Bieksa and SOB will be out of town by the start of training camp (would love it Bieksa+ went for Filatov). As SOB has had some issues and we could probably either go with Alberts/Rome and shelter their minutes and be effective.

I don't think it's necessary to move both of them out of town really. Bieksa makes the most sense because he's a top 4 guy most effective paired with a good shutdown defenseman. Like I said before, his salary won't make any sense if he's playing in the third pairing. Either way, clearing 3.75m off our cap is sufficient enough to re-sign Raymond and add other pieces along the way. I'm also in favour of keeping Alberts too, because I think he could play decently as a 6/7 guy if he's given the time to adapt to the Canuck's system.

Keeping a 6th defenseman until the trade deadline and use him as a trade piece if anyone we could use becomes available would be great.

can you trade a guy after he signs a QO?
I am intrigued by the Filatov idea too, but not sure how good a fit he'd be for this team.. I still covet Andrew Ladd, we need guys like him for the bottom 6

So our D depth is now something like

Ballard-Erhoff
Edler-Hamhuis
Salo-Bieksa
SOB-Rome
Alberts

I guess how much Raymond & Hansen get awarded will determine how we can re-deploy Bieksa's (and Alberts', one hopes) salaries for depth players.

o'brien in a 5th-6th d-man role is perfectly fine by me

with ballard and hamhuis presumably healthy all year o'brien won't have any more illusions of grandeur

That's Mariana Trench deep.

Some part of me wants Gillis to keep all of the defensemen. Just keep 'em all. That way, when the Canucks Playoff Curse arrives, and 30% of our defence gets wiped out by injury, there's a good chance some quality players will remain standing.

Nah, the canucks curse implies that if we carry 9nhl dmen, wed just have season ending injuries to the twins, kesler, burrows, sammuelsson and raymond.

1.) Dan Hamhuis - $4.5m
2.) Keith Ballard - $4.2m
3.) Kevin Bieksa - $3.75m
4.) Sami Salo - $3.5m
5.) Alexander Edler - $3.25m
6.) Christian Ehrhoff - $3.1m
7.) Shane O'Brien - $1.6m
8.) Andrew Alberts - $1.05m
9.) Aaron Rome - $750,000

Total: $25,700,000

I agree, part of me really likes that depth on defense, but someone's gonna go.

EDIT: I should also add that in a bottom pairing role, I quite like SOB as a player. The question is whether or not he's really committed to this team and to winning. If there's questions about that, he should be shipped out IMO. If there are not, then keep him and ditch Alberts.

I wonder when Mitchell will get signed...

But seriously, last year we started the season with 8 defenders and had to trade for Alberts at the deadline. Could it be that bad again this year? Granted Mathieu Schneider was a complete joke so had that situation not happened perhaps we'd have been fine.

O'Brien is decent in a limited role, just turns into a turd when he's relied on too much. He's a good teammate and guys seem to love him. He accepted the QO, so he obviously wants to be a Canuck. He'll likely have a much better defensive partenar than he has been paired with (Salo?) and should be a solid contributor.

Bieksa still looks like the odd man out to me. Keep everyone else.

Personally, I think two bodies will be trimmed from that list. Most likely candidates are Bieksa and one of O'Brien or Alberts, depending on who the team feels can help them more. Rome will be the 7th D-Man and we will have 7 NHL calibre d-men to start the season.

If we do keep both Alberts and SOB, I could really only see Alberts sitting in the press box and not making a stink about it. I don't think SOB would take being a 7th/8th guy too well given his past transgressions.

I'm in favor of giving SOB every opportunity to be the 6th Dman again this year, with a strong push from Rome and Alberts. If he can figure out how to play physically he's a real asset, I always have found him to be pretty good with the puck in his own zone.
We'll see at training camp what he's done to get better. I wouldn't be surprised if he's dealt in early October.

I believe he was paired with Bieksa for lots of last year. I like Bieksa, I like SOB, but that pairing was just an accident waiting to happen.

I actually like O'Brien alot as a limited defensemen who can randomly step up well beyond what you'd expect every once in a while. Best case scenario for the #6 spot, IMO.

Completely agree. Trade Bieksa and Alberts. SOB as our #6, Rome #7, Sweatt or somesuch as #8.

... that is, unless we can somehow retain Mitchell. Then it's sayanara to SOB, Bieksa and probably also Alberts.

Get rid of Bieksa and Alberts and that's the best rebuild of the defense any of us could've hoped for this Summer.

it wasn't just Schneider - though if he didn't ask for a trade, we wouldn't have to acquire Alberts.

the problem was the lack of call-up options as well.... our only call-up options were Baumgartner, Nycholat and Oberg... and even Oberg got a call-up during the year.

This year we are stocked as far as call-up options go... Sweatt is likely the top call-up as of now, but then there's also Oberg, Tanev, Connauton and Sauve.

because of that, I can't see the team carrying 8 dmen this year... they will likely carry 7, with 5 call-up options available in Manitoba.

Considering a lot the media uses CapGeek, they probably have a NHL source sending them all these details.

SOB's QO probably isn't on the top of the list of things guys like LeBrun, Dreger, Mackenzie, etc are looking into.
