Prospal/Dubinsky/Christensen (I put down 3 because either Prospal or Dubinsky can sometimes shift to the wing depending on what's going on)

Stepan has an outside shot at getting on the roster as well.

Yeah, center depth isn't pretty. Still a long ways until the start of the season, though, and trades might happen. Though I do think the Rangers really want Stepan to impress and show he can be the playmaking center they want in the lineup. He could pan out to be similar to Gomez except without the great wheels but a better decision maker with the puck.

At any rate, I'm not sure why people say "Sather made a mistake in dumping the wrong contracts!" like he had an easy choice between Gomez, Drury, and Redden. I'd wager that there weren't any deals on the table for Drury and Redden like there were for Gomez. Sather dealt the player that he could, and got a pretty decent return for a guy who just severely underachieved the year before.

If the deal benefits both teams, so be it.

Awards:
Sergei also signed with the Preds, one year at $550,000. Not too bad.

Agreed...we really don't need a thread every time a former player signs...Halak etc.

Seriously irritates me when people bash players without even seeing them...
Del Zotto's plus-minus took a beating when he was paired with Girardi half-way through the season. Those two paired up together was pretty brutal. Torts should of pulled the plug on that pairing much sooner as they did not mesh well at all.

I can't wait to watch this board implode when Gomez never breaks the 70pt mark again, or at least not with the Habs.

Are people actually trying to justify this trade by Gainey? He traded for one of the worst contracts in league and in the process gave up the Habs #1 prospect and another solid guy in Valentenko, who will be attending the Rags training camp to compete for a job.

One year doesn't make or validate a trade. Just wait until McDonagh is the Rangers #2/#3 defenseman and Valentenko is their #5/6. This board will go crazy.

So the Rangers went to the conference final last year ? Its not just the salary... but because of the Gomez trade, Gainey was able to bring Cammy and Gionta... and don't forget Pyatt is a good 4th liner too.

So I still think it's a good trade for both teams...

When's the last time the Rangers went to the 3rd round? Gomez made it in NJD and MTL, seems NYR is just so awful.

Solid guy like Valentenko? The guys will not make the Rangers, he sucks. He will go back to KHL in October.

#1 prospect? Subban says hi. Subban already proved he can play top minutes in the NHL in the biggest stage.

People look at salary and say omg horrible trade. Gomez is a proven center who is liked by his teammates. His acquisition enabled the Habs to sign the playoff leading scorer in Michael Cammalleri and the heart on two skates, Brian Gionta (who had his 2nd best goal scoring season in the NHL, both with Gomez as center hmmm). Instead the Rangers are stuck with overrated in two skates (Chris Drury), Pylon with no skates (Redden) and LOL Roszival. All 3 have way worse contracts than Gomez. Good luck with Sather as GM.

Despite the success that the team enjoyed this year due in large part to the contribution of the new players, the Gomez trade was not what I would call a raving success. We got some great short term gain, but we gave up some pretty good assets to acquire a player that, given his contract, should have been easier to acquire, especially if Sather was desperate to shed the contract.

The trade is still under evaluation given that McDonagh and Valentenko have not made the team yet. However we are feeling the effects of the contracts MTL acquired last year.

Not saying Gainey had a ton of other choices, just saying it's not a trade that can be labelled as heavily in Montreal's favor. For Montreal, at best McDonagh becomes Balej, at worst, well lets not even go there.

We gave up good assets?
Mcdonagh - who's jury is still out and for awhile his stock was dropping
Valatenko - fled for mother russia before the deal
Higgins - We all know how that turned out

So exactly what assets did we give again?
As for contracts, they usually start off as over-payments and end up as bargains or at least going rate at the end.

I love Gomez and what he brings to the game. But at his cap hit, I'm not sure we are ever going to think of his contract as a bargain.

as for evaluating the trade assets vs assets, I thought I was pretty clear, this trade will take some time to be evaluated.

You are right, Bruins got ripped off. Leafs got the player and the Bruins got a steaming pile of potential

Let me connect the dots for you, if you are going to throw out HFisms...

Quote:

then let's refute said HFism.

I never said that potential trumps proven ability, but for you to disregard a prospect who as of right now is still well regarded is somewhat incomprehensible to me. (leads me to believe we clearly got ripped off in the Halak trade as all we got back was potential)

Also, in my original post I clearly mentioned that the trade would take a little while to evaluate.
