Painful Hypothetical

In Sidney Crosby's draft year, draft positions were determined through a league-wide lottery, with Pittsburgh getting #1 and the Wild slotting in at #4.

What if we had won the lottery and gotten the first overall?

Would we have already won a Stanley Cup?

I say yes.

We already had a solid defensive team under Lemaire (Mitchell, Scultz, Burns), solid goaltenders (Fernandez & Roloson) and such. We would have had at least 3-4 seasons of a Crosby-Gaborik combination on the top line (and would have definitely re-signed Gaborik); add that to a continually improving Koivu anchoring our 2nd line, Bouchard, Walz, Rolston and other FA signings and I'd say it would be about 90% certain.

The lottery's fixed. Everyone knows the NHL wouldn't let Sidney Crosby go to a small...oh wait.

But yeah, I would say the big key to a hypothetical Crosby Cup would be how the chemistry between Gaborik and Sid is; you have two guys who can create their own chances and that's not something teams have every day.

i don't think you even need to pair the two. Gaborik can score all by himself regardless of who his linemates are. Crosby, too, but his best magical powers are turning otherwise unproductive players into decent players. Just think what guys like Radio and Veillieux could have done with crosby in the middle! lol.

If that's his best magical power, you would've put Koivu and Gaborik together and stuck Crosby in between like, Rolston and Dupuis or whatever the situation was. Maybe he could've even saved Daigle's career .

Luckily, we traded in Pouliot for a brand-new Latendresse, otherwise this hypothetical would be a lot more painful.

Just think if we'd gotten the 2nd overall pick and taken Bobby Ryan...

Well I think we'd have a great 1-2 punch in Crosby-Koivu, and we also had Rolston and Bouchard at that time. One more scoring winger and we'd have had a killer top six.

Who knows how well we could have done....probably made it past the first round at least

Pittsburgh has been lucky enough to score 3 generational talents in Lemieux, Jagr, and Crosby. Right place at the right time I guess.

Or ignored the fact that Anze Kopitar "wasn't from a hockey country" and taken him 4th overall?
