I'm sure Lou would politely bring this and the Hossa contract up should the NHL try to reject this. But we all know Bettman hates NJ

BTW, if the Devils sign him to a 17 year 100 million contract you can bet that will be the contract that is held up when there is a lookout a couple years from now.

But wouldn't think fall under the over 35 contract or is that only considered a over 35 contract if they sign it when they are 35 and older?

no because it was an extension which kicks in on July 1st, 2010. When Chris Pronger was 35 years old. It's when the contract kicks in that it matters. They're stupid and didn't think of that.

It is when the contract goes into effect. He turned 35 before July 1 this year so it is a 35 and older contract.

That's where the Flyers screwed up. It depends on the player's age when the contract begins, not when he signs it.

It's only a 35+ contract when they goes into effect either in the season they turn 35 or when they are already 35, I forget the cut off. (I.e., you're 34 now, but will turn 35 between July 1 and June 30, it's a 35+ contract).

Kovy's deal will just be an SPC, standard player contract.

Seriously, I really think Philly is going to be pissed about that contract 5 years from now.

I like how the guy plays now but it really worries me to make him the face of the devils for the next decade. It has been Marty for so many years and it is hard to think that the torch would be passed to Kovalchuck.....I would much rather it be Parise but even if we lock them both up, Kovalchuck steals more press then Zach does

but aren't the last two years of the contract for like a half a million since it was front-loaded?

Correct. His cap hit remains $5mil, though, and if he retires it stays on regardless.

I suppose the could trade it to a team desperate to hit the floor, but if they don't, they're stuck.

Nah, if it's a few years before the next lockout, chances are the insane contract used as an example will have Glen Sather's signature on it.

I'm hoping that Kovie and everyone from Versus invades Bristol tonight NWO-style as LeBron makes his announcement. I can picture it now..."Well Stuart, I've decided to go with..." *BAM* Kovy takes a steel chair right to the back of Scott's head and LeBron turns around as Lou throws powder into his eyes LeBron style just mocking him and then lowblows him as Kovalchuk rips off his suit to reveal the horned NJ as he looks into the camera and does this...

Yeah, but the cap hit is still 4.9 million and change. The cap hit is the average of the contract over the number of years. So right now it looks great for Philly cause they're paying Pronger 7.6 million right now with a 4.9 mil cap hit, but later on when he's 41 or 42 they only have to pay him 525k, but the cap hit is 4.9 mil.

I just enjoy how Brooksie used "4" in place of "for" in his tweet.
