That's a) not something just under 5mil and b) not the amount what would've kept Nabby in NA.
It's a $2 million hit for Zherdev (via Sarah Baicker of CSN Philly), which is a relief for Flyers fans. There was talk Zherdev was looking for $4 million, which was preposterous. The term's perfect; the salary makes this a reasonable gamble for Philly.
Whatever the salary was going to be, it's still so-long Simon Gagne, and thanks for the all cap space.

hartnell is overpaid, Briere is overpaid, Timonen while awesome, is overpaid, Carle is overpaid, Meszaros is overpaid, Boucher is overpaid.
Eklund has a pretty damn good offseason. Some credit is due there. His "facts" were pretty spot on this year.
I like this signing for Philly if he has matured.. Trade Shelley and Meszaros for your 2nd back and sign Turco with that 4mil+ saved and a cheaper third or fourth line center like metropolit.

The difference between Cote and Shelley is just over $500,000, it doesn't make or break your cap.
You need to be at least $1 million under the cap to begin with for insurance and injury call up reasons. Flyers are now over that cap by $2 million with Cote on the roster.

edit: and to be clear, im pretty frustrated by all the overpayments in this offseason and past years. but the shelley signing really just bothers me, because it's completely worthless. he brings nothing new or beneficial to the team. carcillo, asham, and hartnell are all the toughness the flyers need imo. im fine with the zherdev signing since it has potential to be a great deal, but all the other crap might cost us gagne. and that pisses me off. i'd rather see hartnell go if necessary, but really...ideally...nobody should have to be dumped.
edit 2: id also prefer NOT having a cote, and NOT having a shelly, if it means having a ****ing goalie.

Will Zherdev be restricted or unrestricted next summer?
Zherdev on a one year deal will be deadly. He's playing for a heavy contract. But, getting one year full of effort from him should pay off big for Philly even if he is impossible to resign.
