He'll be motivated to earn a big contract for his new bride, and to play well against Malkin, Kovalchuk (NYR? NYI? NJD?) and Ovechkin. Let's hope he steps up big time - he has gamebreaker skill.

Gagen was the real leader of th eold city crew shooter found out. This is why he is being sent packing.

People need to stop comparing Gagne and Zherdev, 2 totally different players who are aksed t lpay 2 totally different roles. Zherdev is not replacing Gagne. He is being brought here to provide complimentary scoring and a gamebreaking element.

In all honesty if he has a great year this deal will be considered a huge steal. I don't see how anyone could complain about this.
waiving Gagne would be one of the worst moves this organization has ever done. I dont care what anyone says. It will be a joke if he is waived. Just the thought of it makes me want to puke.

No hes not. I will take Gagne and what he brings to the table every single time over Zherdev. This has nothing to do with his contract. there was no need to sign Jody Shelley for 1.1 million per. Give Leighton 1.5 million, sign O'Donnell. Because of those moves a player like Gagne will be traded for pennies on the dollar. why? because Holmgren has no salary cap sense. he is ****ing clueless.

Jody Shelley sucks. and when the real games begin in April he will be drinking beer in the pressbox because he wont be needed. 1.1 million for a piece of garbage.

Shelley is useless. Stop cluttering all these threads telling us how awesome he is.

Oh, if only we could've signed Nabakov...this whole thing would've worked out perfectly!

Best wishes to Gange, wherever he ends up.

I like the Zherdev signing at 2 million. I think this guy should be highly motivated after what he went through in the last year. Highly motivated for him may be halfway motivated compared to others but I would take 25-20 goals and no Carcillo in the top 6 forwards.

I like all 6 of our D-men but its hard to pay your bottom 4 guys 12 million +

The Shelley signing was a terrible waste of 400k or so for a 13th forward. (all the Atlantic goon signings back to Brashear last year are hideous)

Gagne won't be back in '11-'12 anyway but I would like him to win a cup here this year. I would probably move Carle if I could at this point but I would rather have kept him and not got Mezaros.

philly has plenty of guys who play a solid two-way game. the fact is, if you can get a guy who is going to put up around 55-60 points for 2 million, its a great deal. the leadership in that locker room, by most accounts, is very good with richards and pronger there.

Sorry if someone has answered this, but I believe that as long as a player isn't on LITR or in the AHL they count against the cap. So to my knowledge even if they just sit on the bench all game, or just sit in the press box their hit still counts.

You can waive a guy and not assign him to the AHL and he doesn't count against the cap.

Did some playing with the capgeek tonight and posted this on O&B:

Assumptions - sign Turco at $2.25M/yr, sign Carcillo at $1.3M, sign Powe at $650K, trade Gagne for no salary coming back (picks/prospects):

Hartnell-Briere-Leino - great chemistry
JVR-Carter-Giroux - Carter with two great playmakers who play well together
Carcillo-Richards-Zherdev - two gritty guys with Zherdev
Powe-Betts-Lappy - Betts will miss games with shoulder problems, Lappy might not come back 100%. We'll need 13 forwards
Shelley

Pronger-Carle
Timonen - Coburn
Meszaros - O'Donnell
Bartulis

Turco-Leighton

Even with 7 D and 13F, we are over a million under. If you wanted more cushion, sign Turco and waive or trade Leighton and keep Boucher.

I approve of this post. In fact, I'm getting excited because I think this is actually what Homer has in mind....but I'm probably just setting myself up for disappointment, lol.

I think Gagne will get the Flyers something. Maybe a pick and a player that makes about as much as Carcillo maybe less. I like Gagne just as much as the next guy but not at 5.25 million. Anybody who thinks Zherdev at 2 million for 1 year is a bad deal is crazy. Gagne is our most expensive forward that we can afford to deal - because he is injured way too often and is at the end of his contract.

I don't like the Shelley contract but other than that I think Homer has done a good job- if and only if he can sign Turco to around 2million for 2 years. And Meszaros is a hell of a lot better player than Carle. He should be on the 1st pairing with Pronger.

That is all

If anyone needs a complete synopsis of this thread so far:

1.) oh not zherdev we need a goalie
2.) on second thought if we get him cheap it's cool
3.) oh nice we got him cheap
4.) gagne is better zherdev is stupid
5.) we still need a goalie

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Gagne is NOT getting waived.

Gagne will be dealt in the next week.

Gagne is not worth his $5.25 contract, stats and injuries don't lie.

If Holmgren was such a bad GM, example in 3 full years as Flyers GM, he has 3 playoff appearances, 2 Eastern Conference Final appearances, 1 Stanley Cup Finals appearance. And please don't call it dumb luck or that they were Bob Clarke players.

Holmgren was in charge of scouting and the drafts, once again, fact.

You simply don't have a clue what your talking about.

what is your problem with gagne? what is this about stats not lying? his stats look pretty damned good.

not 5.25 mil worthy, but once you take his defensive abilities into account, the contract is actually pretty close to his worth.
